2. Costumes
Costumes for teenagers will consist of:
• T-shirts (black, blue or white etc.), jeans (black, blue or grey etc.), trainers (Nike, Adidas, blue, black or
grey), jumpers and/or coats (black, blue or grey etc.). Typical fashionable clothing for a popular group of
teenagers. The idea is to dress as they would normally dress whilst going camping to give the movie/film a
more realistic feel.
• These costume ideas follow horror stereotypes as the teenagers are normal people and therefore the
audience can relate to what they are seeing as it could happen to them. Additionally, the costumes follow
the teenage stereotype of tight clothing and overly sexualising the female characters in the film or movie.
For my movie/film the female characters will be wearing more respectable clothing as the film is set in a
more winterised environment and therefore it would not be practical to wear clothing such as shorts,
crop/tank tops for either gender. This does go against the horror convention however makes sense for the
time of year the movie is set in. Finally the clothing will be simple, plain and is able to get ruined, this
allows the audience to focus on the events taking place within the story itself rather than the clothing.
This follows the horror conventions as the clothing in horror movies is simple, commonly gets ruined or
dirty and covered in something unpleasant.
Costumes for creature character will consist of:
• The creature will have no costume, this is because the idea of the creature is to remain hidden throughout
the movie to add more suspense to the film/movie. This means therefore that no costume is required for
the monster/creature.
• This idea that the creature has no costume because it cannot be seen is a common idea amongst horror
movies as it adds mystery and an element of the unknown to what the audience sees. Additionally,
creatures and monsters now are commonly created through CGI and therefore due to a lack of technology
it is difficult to make a creature look realistic. Movies such as ‘Star Wars’ used animatronics and
professional makeup artists to bring their creatures to life. As this is not available to me throughout my
production and planning phase I will use camera angles and filming techniques to bring the beast to life.
3. Props
Props for camping consists of:
• Tents, sleeping bags, roll mats/air beds, camping chairs for each person, camping
stoves/gas hobs, torches and lamps, tarpaulin, rope, back packs, suitable work
clothing e.g. coats and walking boots.
Additional props:
• Fake blood/ fake blood equivalent, clothes that can get damaged, video/recording
cameras and mobile phones.
• These props are very simple yet effective in their purpose, the camping equipment
is generic and has no real significance within the film other than playing the role of
the set. They are there to set the scene of the camping ground. However, the
additional props such as the fake blood and clothing that can be wrecked or ruined
is following the convention of the horror genre. In almost every single horror film
the clothing gets something on it or gets ripped, this allows audiences to know
that there has been some sort of struggle or attack. Another use of props to
illustrate to the audience how amateur the movies characters are is the use of
cheap film cameras. This recording cameras show the audience that the teenagers
camping haven't got much income and that they are just there to have fun. This
makes the characters more relatable and the subtle use of everyday items makes
the audience feel like it could be them in this very situation.
4. Costume Examples
Above are three examples of teenage fashion from 2015, this is what my male teenage
characters are based around. They will be wearing clothing of this fashion as these are what
teenagers predominantly wear at the moment. This does not directly link to the horror genre
itself but to many films involving teenagers, they are simply wearing what is fashionable for the
time the movie is set in. Once again the audience will be drawn to them as they will have seen
people wearing clothes of this variety in day to day life and therefore can relate to them.
Additionally, as the clothing is common place we know that the characters are regular, normal
people.
