YOU SHOULD USE THIS TO STRUCTURE YOUR STAGE 1
RESPONSE. ADD SLIDES WHERE NECESSARY AND
ILLUSTRATIONS. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS CLICK ON THE
BOX UNDER THE QUESTION/INFO!
2. PROPOSAL AND PITCH
This template is to allow you to structure your proposal and
pitch. You should be using the work from Stage 1 to help you
to complete Stage 2. As such your proposal should be a
summary of the info collected in your research.
It is important you provide as much product information as
possible (content outline, target audience, resources, cast
and crew requirements, budget, project schedule, market fit).
This template constitutes your proposal, it will be the basis
of your Video Pitch/Presentation.
3. OUTLINE
Synopsis of your proposal â what is your film about? What
happens in it?
Set on Halloween night, a teenage witch named Tia attempts to
create her own spell to make her laundry wash itself to save her
from doing her chores. However the spell doesnât go as planned
and the witchâs laundry comes to life resulting in messing up her
house! While Tia is trying to stop the laundry and create a counter
spell, the laundry answers the door to a young trick or treater.
Quickly running downstairs, she reverses the spell causing the
laundry to fall to the ground before the parent turns and sees after
being on the phone. In the end Tia must clean and fold all of the
laundry herself learning she must take responsibility for her own
chores.
4. MARKET FIT
How does your film fit within itâs market/genre?
Consider your research and justify your position
My film fits within the fantasy genre. In my film I am going to use classic
fantasy genre conventions to identify this, these conventions include
things such as; a witches hat, a witches broom, a magic wand, a cat, a
cauldron and several other visuals that belong in the category of fantasy
conventions. In my film I am going to use a blue/ purple colour palette as
this colour grading technique is used in many fantasy films such as
âHarry Potterâ, âLord of the Ringsâ and âInto the Woodsâ.
In my film I have decided I want to use classical music over my footage,
however to make this fit within the fantasy genre I am going to select a
soundtrack that includes musical techniques that reflect a fantasy film.
For example films such as âMaleficentâ and âAlice in Wonderlandâ consist
of these kind of soundtracks.
6. CHARACTERS
Details on characters, their motivations, backstory, etc.
TIA THE WITCH:
Tia is a 18 year old witch who lives with her mother however is often home alone. Tia has long
black hair and her style is rather gothic. She wears dark clothing and heavy black makeup,
however she has a heart of gold and loved by all. Her possessions are classic fantasy/ witch
conventions such as a pointed hat, a magic wand, a broom, a potion cauldron and a cat. She
is motivated to create a spell to make her laundry do itself, this ambition could infer that the
character is rather lazy and does not like to pull her own weight.
TRICK OR TREATER & ADULT/SUPERVISOR:
The trick or treater (who witnesses the magic laundry) in this film does not give away too much
detail. We see the childâs bucket is full of sweets which infers the child is very fortunate and
lucky. Also the child is seen at the witchâs door with an adult who could be the child's father or
brother, this is not identified. The adult/ supervisor is wearing a smart shirt and trousers while
on the phone with his back turned. With this the audience can identify that this family may be
rather wealthy. Also, we slightly overhear the phone call occurring between the adult and
whomever he may be talking to. We can identify that the call is work related which infers that
he is very engrossed in his job and isn't taking time to bond with his son/brother.
7. TARGET AUDIENCE
Who is your film aimed at? You could summarise your research and
use this to justify your choice of audience. How does you film
fit/target this audience?
My film is aimed at a wide family audience. Most probably from the ages of 10 â
35. I have chosen to aim my film at such a wide audience because my film is
written to be an uplifting and fun film to watch. I want to take the fantasy genre, of
which has been made very dark and intense in several franchises over the past 10
years, and make it into something that everybody can relate to. In my film I have
three characters, each one representing an age group on each end of the
spectrum within my audience age range. For example, the trick or treater is a
child, the younger viewers relate to this character and his actions. The character of
Tia is aged 18, this falls right in the middle of the age range spectrum. Finally is
the character of the father/brother who falls at the upper end of the audience age
range spectrum. One technique I am going to use to make my film uplifting and
fun to watch is using classical music over the footage just like Disneyâs 1940
âFantasiaâ.
8. LOCATIONS
Details on proposed shooting locations and images from recces
and research. For extra detail explain how you intend to use the
environment, where are you going to put the camera, consider time
for day for shooting and practical considerations [is it busy? Do you
need to book it? Are there any legal restrictions/permissions to
consider?].
I am going to be filming at my own home. The reason I have chosen to shoot
inside my own home is because it will give me access to a wide variety of rooms of
which I can move around furniture and do with what I wish. This will allow me to,
visually, make my film exactly how I want it to Also by filming in my own home, it
will make actual production hours more flexible if we need to run over time as
there will be no pressure for us to have to pack up equipment and leave like if I
were shooting on a location that needs to be booked out.
My second location is going to be in the studio. To achieve my magic laundry I am
going to use a green screen and green morph suits. I have easy access to studios
and green screen equipment from my college.
9. RESOURCES
What resources do you need/intend to use for you production? How
do you intend to obtain these
For the production of our film I intend to use a Cannon 750 DSLR camera, a libec
tripod and an audio recorder. I can book this kind of equipment out from my
college by filling out a request form and emailing it to the technician of the film and
media department. To successfully create the magic laundry and to create the
illusion that it is alive I need a green screen and green morph suits. The studios
accessible to me in college are equip with a green screen that I can use for free,
however I am going to need to purchase two morph suits from online, however
these are not expensive therefore will not build a large budget. I want to use
dramatic lighting for effect in my short film, however the only lighting available to
me from college are small LED ring lights which will not be bright enough to create
intense light and dark in one frame. These lights are mainly used to enhance
ambient light. I have decided to use the torches on several smart phones to
produce my lighting, not only are these torches very bright but they are also very
white toned which is what I wanted to originally use.
10. CREW
REQUIREMENTS
Details on requirements for production team and any specific skills
needed. Who are you going to use?
For production I intend to use a very small team of cast and crew. For my crew I
only need two members. These being somebody handling the camera and
somebody handling the audio.
For my camera equipment I am going to be using a DSLR camera and a libec
tripod. These two sets of equipment are relatively easy to use, from what I have
been taught on my course, I am able to adjust different settings on the camera
easily to make my footage of the best quality.
When it comes to the audio equipment I am going to be using Tascam audio
recorder. These are very simple to operate, therefore I will only need my crew
member to listen to the audio through headphones, ensure the audio is to the best
quality and start and stop the recorder when filming. Regarding skills, I have
chosen two people that are on my course to manage the camera and audio,
therefore their skill set and knowledge of the equipment is to the same standard as
my own.
11. CAST REQUIREMENTS
Who are going to play the characters in your film? Explain you
decisions, how have you overcome issues with getting them? Do
you have a backup?
For my cast I need three actors. These being the protagonist, the child trick or
treater and the adult.
I have already cast my three cast members, two of my cast members being family
and one being a close friend who is trained in performing arts therefore will give a
convincing performance. However I do have back up understudies in case
somebody is unable to follow through last minute.
I have cast understudies for my production as if any of the cast members have to
drop out at the last minute, then I have back up people. This way my film is
guaranteed to be produced with minimal issues regarding people. I have also
chosen cast and crew members that have easy option for travelling to location.
Two of the cast/ crew members can drive, one cast/crew member has easy access
to public transport, and the other cast/crew member (my brother) lives with me. I
have carefully selected cast/crew members so transport wonât become an issue.
12. BUDGET
HYPOTHETICAL BUDGET:
⢠Camera - to hire a Canon EOS 5D Mklll camera is £64.00 per day. I will need my camera for three days of
production therefore this will amount to ÂŁ192.00.
⢠Camera - for a slightly more expensive and higher quality camera it will £110.00 per day. For three days
this will result in ÂŁ330.00.
⢠Tripod - A simple Manfrotto Fluid Tripod for my camera has a day rate if of only £8.00. For three days this
will cost only ÂŁ24.00 which will save me money which I can spend in other areas.
⢠Sound â A basic boom mic would have a day rate of ÂŁ7.00. For a total of three days of production this
would result in costing ÂŁ21.00.
⢠Editing Suite â Digital Snowball Editorial Suite in London costs ÂŁ180.00 per day. For three days this would
result in a total ÂŁ540.00.
⢠Actors â An actors rate of pay is around ÂŁ100.00 an hour. Two days of shooting and around five hours on
set each day it would result in a cost of ÂŁ1000. However if I decreased the length of each day that we are
on location to four hours, this will only cost ÂŁ400. Therefore doing two, four hour days instead would only
cost ÂŁ800.
⢠Costumes/ Props â The only costumes/props that are needed for my film are very small details. These
include a witches hat (ÂŁ2.50), a cauldron (ÂŁ3.99), a magic wand (ÂŁ8.00), a witches cloak (ÂŁ10.99_) and a
child's Halloween costume (ÂŁ6.99). Altogether this results in a cost of ÂŁ32.47.
TOTAL HYPOTHETICAL BUDGET COST = ÂŁ1747.47
13. BUDGET
A breakdown of how much intend to spend making the film, this should
consider travel, consumables, equipment booking, fees, etc. Your total
should also have a 10% contingency for problems, etc. Your main currency
for equipment from college and facilities [green screen, lighting, studio, etc]
is our cryptocurrency [G-Units?].
REALISTIC BUDGET:
For my realistic budget I am not going to have to spend money on most of the
things I have researched in my hypothetical budget. For example I am not going to
have to hire a cast or a crew as these will consists of my friends who are willing to
help me out free of charge. Also I am not going to have to hire any equipment or
studios are these things are all assessable to me from my college for free. The
only things I am going to have to buy myself are costumes and props.
Costumes and Props - The only costumes/props that are needed for my film are
very small details. These include a witches hat (ÂŁ2.50), a cauldron (ÂŁ3.99), a
magic wand (ÂŁ8.00), a witches cloak (ÂŁ10.99_), a child's Halloween costume
(ÂŁ6.99) and two green morph suits (ÂŁ20.00).
TOTAL REALISTIC BUDGET = ÂŁ52.47
14. SCHEDULE
I am going to keep track of my schedule by
regularly checking up on where I need to be. I
have written my schedule very straight
forward so I can stick to one or two main
areas rather than trying to keep track of
detailed areas. I have written my schedule in
week long sections therefore I can check back
weekly. Also I have given myself two or three
tasks to complete during one week if they are
smaller tasks such as âtest shootsâ however
only given myself one task a week if they are
more detailed and difficult tasks such as âpost-
productionâ. I have also given myself the final
week of the six weeks to finish any
outstanding work I may have. Giving myself a
week to do this is very beneficial as it allows
me to prevent stress when the time comes if I
have given myself too much work to do in a
small amount of time.
