Horror proposal
1. Horror Proposal
Idea summary:
Group of friends go camping, a few go missing and they find a body, they see a glimpse of a
creature and run back to their camp site. They eventually make their way back to camp and
progressively get picked off by the creature. (Basic storyline).
Narrative:
My movie/film introduction will follow a stones structure (linear narrative) from Todorov’s
theory. This is a common theory amongst movies and is how fairy tales are commonly read
to children, beginning, middle and end. This allows the story to develop and grow as you
learn more and more along a simple story structure. The characters are introduced
(beginning), how they’re affected by what happens (middle) and finally the result of what
has happened (end).
Characters:
A group of teenagers, roughly 15 male and female mixture and one main group leader who
is clear to the audience. Protagonist is obvious for those viewing and the teenagers follow
him in what he does throughout the filmor movie.
Locations:
Woods and/or open field (night-time) Open areas surrounded by trees and dark shapes
adding an eerie affect to the viewing. Camp ground area e.g. tented area. The wooded area
is dark and mysterious, moving trees and strange noises due to wind or animals adds to the
eeriness of the scenes involving the wood, additionally it as the wood is vast and compact
there is a lot of it the viewer cannot see and therefore their imagination runs wild. The
campground is viewed as the safe area and therefore if something goes wrong there then it
is a shock to the audience and once again makes them wonder what will happen.
Costumes/Props:
Camping equipment (props):
Tents, camping chairs, camping lights/torches, cooking equipment e.g. camping stoves and
gas cookers, sleeping bags, back packs and clothes.
Additional equipment (props):
Recording camera, fake blood, torches, batteries, old clothes (able to be ripped or damaged
for necessary scenes) and food/snacks.
Campers costumes (costumes):
2. T-shirts (white, blue and black), skinny jeans (blue or black), trainers (Nike, Adidas, blue or
black), coats or hoodies (blue, black, red, green etc.) and hat gloves and scarves (blue, black
etc.).
Creatures (costume):
No costume, the aim of the creature is not to be seen and as it is simply the first 2 minutes
of an introduction to a movie/film it will not be shown in the video.
Soundtrack:
Eerie soundtrack, typical horror music e.g. strings and orchestra. Quiet background music
with off notes to allow for suspense. Most horror movies/films have out of tune music or
notes that are next to each other that don’t quite work, this adds an element of fear or as if
something is misplaced within the movie/film itself. Additionally, the use of loud high
pitched notes when something shocking or sudden occurs to add a ‘jump factor’ to the
movie.
Effects:
Fading transitions and dark blurred filters to show contrast to bright blood and lights.
Additionally, filters that make footage blurry allow for suspense to build as it is unclear what
is happening. Another use of editing will be how the camera filter looks from the first person
POV (point of view). The first person footage will have a static/blurred old film filter over it
to make it look like amateur footage.
Editing:
The editing of my movie/film is reminiscent of ‘The Blair Witch Project’ as it is from the
point of view of a video camera; this is to add a more personal feel to the movie/film. The
‘Rec’ and time and date on the screen reinforce the fact that it is from the view of a camera.
The editing will also make the surroundings dull to bring out the contrast in the blood within
scenes. Finally giving the footage a blurry filter allows suspense to build as the audience
struggle to see what happens and reinforces the characters amateur nature whilst filming.
Target Audience:
The target Audience is 18 or above as this fits with the horror conventions. Most horror
movies and films are either 18’s or 15’s and therefore this follows that suit. My movie/film
will draw in my target audience by including what they are looking for in this type of movie
e.g. gore and violence. This will also help make my movie/film stick with the traditions of a
horror by adding a fear factor that the audience are looking for.
