- A “citation” tells your readers that specific material in your work has come from another source. It gives credit to the source and provides the readers information such as: Authors details. the title of the work. the page numbers of the material you are borrowing.
- You should always give credit to the original author by citing sources as this will help you in avoiding plagiarism. However, there are various other reasons to cite sources. Citations tell the readers where the ideas have come from. Not every source is accurate or factual. Proper citation helps you from taking the rap for someone else’s bad work. Citing sources demonstrates the research work you have done. Citing sources gives you credibility.
- Various scholarly and professional organizations have developed their ways of citing information. Some of the most commonly used citation styles include the APA (The American Psychological Association) and the MLA (Modern Language Association). Some other citation styles are Turabian, Chicago (published by the University of Chicago), CSE (Council of Science Editors), Harvard, and IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).
- You need to use the citation style appropriate for the field you are writing for. For instance, various social scientists use APA citation style.
