Role of EGNOS in Rail 
The future: 
EGNOS V3 under development, offering multifrequency/multiconstellationaugmentation, will further improve accuracy and reliability of the positioning information 
EGNOS is key for safety relevant railway applications! 
integritydelivered by EGNOS is the enabler of GNSS based positioning in railway signalling 
accuracy improved by EGNOS is offering improved precision of positioning for free, which can further contribute to efficiency of train localisation in ERTMS

Challenges for EGNOS 
Railway stakeholders need to define requirements in the difficult railway environment 
UNISIG is working on defininguser requirements with the support of GSA 
Unlike in Aviation, railway is suffering multipath effects and signal outages (cuttings, tunnels, urban canyons) 
Minimum requirements on GNSS are difficult to define. There is a need for and require additional performance testing to be conducted by railway experts with the support of the satellite industry 
Results of FP7 projects addressing the issue of additional sensor integration (ex. odometer, eddy current sensor) are available for railway experts
Objectivedevelopment of a safety relevant satellite based on- board train localisation unit to be used on low density railway lines 
EGNOS relevance GaLoROIis using EGNOS to provide integrity and increased positioning accuracy in combination with Eddy current sensors

Challenges for EGNOS Railway stakeholders need to define requirements in the difficult railway environment UNISIG is working on defininguser requirements with the support of GSA Unlike in Aviation, railway is suffering multipath effects and signal outages (cuttings, tunnels, urban canyons) Minimum requirements on GNSS are difficult to define. There is a need for and require additional performance testing to be conducted by railway experts with the support of the satellite industry Results of FP7 projects addressing the issue of additional sensor integration (ex. odometer, eddy current sensor) are available for railway experts
