2. Previous audience research
• Male: Action (40%), Drama (10%), Thriller (30%), Romance (0%), Comedy (10%), Musical
(0%), Western (0%), Sci-fi (10%)
• Female: Action (30%), Drama (10%), Thriller (10%), Romance (30%), Comedy (20%),
Musical (0%), Western (0%), Sci-fi (0%)
• I asked 20 males and 20 females (aged 16-18) on what genre film they preferred from;
action, drama, thriller, romance, comedy, musical, western and sci-fi. The result for males
were that they preferred action and they least preferred drama and comedy. Whereas
the females preferred action and romance and least preferred drama and thriller.
• As a result we came to the decision that our audience should be young males 16-24
3. After the audience feedback
• The audience feedback on the finished thriller opening showed great
excitement towards the editing and structure of the film. They were
enticed in the way this added tension to the film along with the
effective soundtrack matching the mood. This goes against the fiscoff
study as we attracted viewers outside our ideal target audience, and
may gather a wider audience.
4. What would appeal to this audience?
• This audience will appeal to the mysterious murder from the get go of
the film, allowing them to grip and pay more attention. Also the use
of male preferred props such as a gun will excite them as it infers
action is coming soon and as my research shows males prefer action.
As there is more physical conflict than there is mental, the male
gender will appeal to this more.
5. Is social class a factor?
• There may be stereotypes regarding intelligence in relation to class,
but this isn’t relevant to our film.
• In my own opinion, the factor which has the most effect upon the
impact of the film is age, as older generations may not understand
the film’s plot and some of the dialogue. The violent and dangerous
behaviour that may be influential for teens depends on factors such
as ‘realism, context and setting’. In our film, there is a mild essence of
violence, we chose not to dwell on the hard details due to our
audience which may be under 18.
