IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE
FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
2. Conventions of the thriller genre used
in BloodThirst
‘Ordinary citizens accidentally drawn to danger’
‘Fast-paced and frequent action’
‘Characters who switch sides or who cannot be trusted’
‘Primary mood: fearful excitement’
‘Resourceful heroes who must thwart the actions of more powerful and better
equipped villains’
3. ‘Fast-paced and
frequent action’
This is shown through the frequent stare of the
Eduardo in the direction of Christina as she’s
walking home, preparing for the right time to
kill her. The scene in which Christina is caught
by the boss and shot by Eduardo is a
particularly strong representation of fast-
paced and frequent action.
4. ‘Fast-paced and
frequent action’
Each time the shot returns to
the evil stare of Eduardo or
Christina walking home. This
intensifies the action and
mood of the film.
5. ‘Resourceful heroes who
must thwart the actions of
more powerful and better
equipped villains.
This convention is not yet shown in the opening
of the thriller, but the boss and Eduardo create
the basis for this convention later on in the film.
The character ‘Eduardo’ is vulnerable in
comparison to the boss who has supreme
power on the estate and many dangerous links
with gangs. However as Eduardo is a highly
skilled assassin and can become a bigger
threat to the boss and be just as strong as him
too.The plot would continue by
following up more murders the boss
has told Eduardo to be a part of.
This allows the audience to see the
resent to kill the innocent in
Eduardo’s eyes compared to the
lust to doso in the eyes of the bos.
6. ‘Ordinary citizens
accidentally drawn
to danger’
Each of the Boss’ victims are ordinary people,
however by being advised to take out loans at
his organisation, many fll victim to his high
interest rates of 50%. We see the genuine
confusion of Christina as she sees him whilst
walking home, thus meaning she didn’t know
she was about to be murdered for her late
payments.
7. This thriller convention is used in
North by Northwest as Cary Grant’s
confused and disorientated
reactions portrays those of
Christina’s
8. ‘Primary mood: fearful
excitement’
This is shown at (0:52) when the
gun is given to Eduardo from
the Boss. As a result the
audience anticipate what is to
follow this (a murder).
9. ‘Characters who switch
sides or who cannot be
trusted’
This applies to the Boss character although the
audience may not see this, some may notice he
doesn’t appear genuine and loyal to his
colleague Eduardo.
