SELECTIVE BREEDING
By: Dilshan 8B1
WHAT IS SELECTIVE BREEDING?
 It is the process used by humans to produce breeds of animals or
varieties of plants.
 The breeding is normally done by a professional breeder.
 It is used for particular genetic traits.
EXAMPLES OF SELECTIVE BREEDING:
 Farmers may choose individual cows to mate which will produce a
newer generation of cows that are better at producing milk.
 Apple growers would like to produce a type of apple which is tasty
but also resistant to diseases. They could do this by crossing a
variety of apple known for taste with another type which shows
strong resistance to diseases.
WHAT IS PLANT BREEDING?
 Plant breeding is the science of adapting the genetics of plants for
the benefit of humankind.
 The overall aim of plant breeding is to improve the quality,
performance diversity of crops with the objective of developing
plants better adapted to human needs.
 Modern plant breeding only dates from the scientific discoveries on
genetics of Gregor Mendel published in 1865.
WHAT IS ANIMAL BREEDING?
 Animal breeding is something humans do to animals to improve their
qualities.
 It improves their qualities for example:
1. It can make a chicken more fatter so it can have more meat in it so
people can make more business.
2. It can make a sheep grow more cotton/wool if they don’t produce
much. With that, it can make more business.
DIFFERENT WAYS OF BREEDING:
Artificial Insemination
Cloning
Genetic Engineering
WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION?
 Artificial insemination (AI) is when animal breeders place semen
from a male animal into a female animal. The sperm from the semen
meets with the female’s egg and a baby animal begins to develop.
WHAT IS SEMEN?
Semen is the male reproductive fluid.
WHAT IS CLONING?
 Identical twins are an example of naturally occurring cloning. In
recent years, scientists have figured out how to make clones in the
lab.
 The first mammal to be intentionally cloned from an adult cell was a
sheep called Dolly in 1996. Dolly was created using the technique of
somatic cell nuclear transfer.
WHAT IS GENETIC ENGINEERING?
 Genetic engineering is another useful tool in animal production. It
introduces new genes to the food animal population. Animal breeders
are interested in using this technology to increase animal
productivity, improve resistance to diseases and parasites, and make
food more nutritious.
