ince March 2020,
Suriname is listed as one of
the many countries in the
world that has been affected by the
Covid-19 virus. Due to this
pandemic, the members, observers
and guests of JCI Paramaribo
couldn’t gather together for
activities, such as: General
Meetings, projects and Retentions.
Nevertheless, they figured out a
creative way to stay in touch with
each other via the application:
‘Google Hangout’. On April 04, 2020
they organized a ‘Google Hangout
Retention’ for the first time. They had
a conversation for three hours and
discussed various topics, such as:
how they realize their dreams/ goals
during the lockdown, how they
protect themselves against further
spreading of the Covid-19 virus and
their opinion about distance learning
in Suriname.

2. Let there Be Light 2020
J
CI Paramaribo and JCI
Female took the
initiative to execute a
collaboration fundraising
project. This project was
titled: ‘Let There Be Light’
and the main purpose was
to bring a little enlightment in
the situation of some less fortunate families in Suriname and people who are affected directly by
the effects of the Covid-19 virus. From April 21-April 30, 2020, various food products and also
voluntary financial contributions were collected. At the beginning of the project, 5 families were
identified who were eligible for a food package, but thanks to the generous contribution of the
donors, we were able to provide 8 families with a food package. On May 03, 2020 a team of
JCI Paramaribo and JCI Female, visited the homes of the 8 families, where the packages were
handed over. It was a real pleasure for us to reach a helping hand to those in need. We also like to
thank everyone who donated and helped contribute to the successful execution of this project.

n April 25, 2020, Local President Rinat Adipi paid some fellows a visit at
home and surprised them with a very special and thoughtful present.
The fellows had the opportunity to register a couple of weeks before, but
the present was a surprise from the beginning. Everyone received a watermelon
with a personal tekst to keep them motivated. The fellows
appreciated the present and attention from the
Local President enormously!

hanks to the modern technology we can keep pursuing
some of our goals as a chapter and stay connected with
each other. From April 30 to May 03, 2020 we provided
an online Membership & Extension Drive (M & E Drive) to
1 observer and 11 guests of JCI Paramaribo via the application:
‘Zoom’. The following courses were conducted during the 4-day
training: ‘JCI Paramaribo History’, ‘Be Excellent’, ‘JCI Impact’, ‘JCI
Achieve’ and ‘JCI Admin’. The trainers who made the online
Membership & Extension Drive possible and a great success
were: Past Officer Ramona Biswana, National Vice President
Rôchelle Rijssel, Past National President Donaghy Malone,
Fellow Tachanna Brown and Past President
Charissa Malone-Berrenstein. The trainers had a great time shar-
ing this JCI knowledge with our new driven observer and guests.

took place of the online Membership & Extension
Drive (M & E Drive). 10 of the 12 participants received
their certificate. In addition, 6 guests received their Broki Card
and with that, JCI Paramaribo counts 7 observers. A couple of
weeks before, the observers got the opportunity to plan a
Mother’s Day fundraising in which mainly food products were
collected. This fundraising was executed for some less fortunate
mothers, that were identified by the observers. After the
certificate ceremony, the group visited the homes of two
mothers, where the packages were handed over. We like to
thank everyone who donated and contributed to the
successful execution of this Mother’s Day fundraising.

Throwback Game Day Retention
O
n Saturday May
16, 2020 we
organized a
Throwback Game Day
Retention, in which the
Covid-19 guidelines were
strictly followed. This was
our first activity after two
months of lockdown and
staying in quarantine. We
love game days and have
organized plenty of them
before, but this one was very
unique because the focus was
on games from the good old
days, such as: djompo foetoe,
elastic twist, jumping rope,
hoela hoop, Tango, Boter Melk
en Kaas, Vier op een rij,
Domino, Jongens Meisjes,
Mens Erger je Niet etc. The
decoration of the venue and
the different snacks completed the nostalgic atmosphere. The
participants were divided in groups and participated in all the
games. The game night was closed off with our all time favorite
game: Cherades. It was nice to catch up after a while and most
importantly, the participants had a blast together.

5. 30 Minute Taki with Sylvia Jacobi
O
n June 05, 2020 JCI Paramaribo was at it again with the 30 Minute Taki.
This time we chose ‘Covid-19’ as theme, since it’s one of the most
discussed topics at the moment. As a chapter we believe that it’s very
important to keep our members, observers and guests informerd and up to date
about this virus that has almost the whole world upside down. With great pleasure
we welcomed the Health Officer and Project Coördinater of ‘het Surinaamse Rode
Kruis’, Sylvia Jacobi as special guest. The health officer mainly provided
information about: wat the Covid-19 virus exactly is, the current
situation regarding the number of positive Covid-19 cases in
Suriname and some useful tips on how to protect ourself and
prevent further transmission of the Covid-19 virus.

30 Minute Taki with Marvin Pollack
A
t the end of the month April, the JCI Paramaribo board introduced the ’30
Minute Taki’. A zoom call that’s hosted every Monday, Wednesday and
Friday of the week. A creative way for the members, observers and guests
to keep in touch with each other. Every week another topic is discussed. To make
the ‘30 Minute Taki’ more interesting and educative we invited some guests
speakers in the last few weeks with different backgrounds who shared some
knowledge with the group. On May 07, 2020 we welcomed Senator Marvin Pollack
a.k.a ‘the Impact coach’ as our first special guest. The topic of the night was: ‘Life,
love and leadership’. The Impact coach gave a very important meaning to these
three words by linking them to his personal and professional life. He also shared with
the participants, how to find a balance between these three elements at all times.

H
ealthy food and fitness are the key elements to a healthy life. In this period of the Covid-19
pandemic it’ s very important to boost our imuunsystem by eating healthy and exercising
regularly. On June 16, 2020 we hosted our fourth special edition of the ‘30 Minute Taki’ in
collaboration with JCI Unify. ‘Food and Fitness’ is the topic that was discussed this time. Our guest
of the evening was the founder & trainer of Warrior Fit Movement, Rajiv Makhanlal. Rajiv first gave

considered as healthy.
30 Minute Taki with Leanda Zeldenrust
‘F
inance management’ is not only part of daily business, but also part of our daily life. During
a crisis or pandemic it can be a little bit challenging to manage your finances. To inform our
fellows and observers more about this subject, we decided to discuss the topic: ‘Finance
Management during Covid-19’ during our 5th
special edition of the ‘30 Minute Taki’. This time we
collaborated with JCI SYMA and had the pleasure to welcome the founder of Leduc Consultancy and
Training, Leanda Zeldenrust as special speaker of the night. The finance specialist provided some
useful information about: budgeting in general, budgeting in a period of crisis and how to pursue your
financial goals during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Not only with our fellow local
chapters but also with JCI
chapters from abroad.
Having said that, Local
President Rinat Adipi
grabbed the beautiful
opportunity to participate in
the JCI networking training
from JCI IOBA Curaçao on
June 13, 2020. The training
was conducted by the JCI
Executive Vice President
(EVP), Kevin Hinds. The
EVP provided some useful
tools to the participants such
as: the different steps of
networking and how to
introduce yourself within 15
seconds. They also learned
that your network is not
everyone you know and vice
versa, but the people who
would leave their house at
2am to help you, the people
who would leave their job to
help you, the people who
would be willing to give you
a month salary or lend you
their car. The training was
closed off with a fun social
closing ceremony, in which
the members participated in
a game and listened to
some music. Looking back
on an interesting, interactive
and very fun training.

The Game Sunday
T
here's not much to do on a Sunday night
when the entire country is in total
lockdown. As innovative and creative
members we make the best of every situation so
we had a game night on June 14, 2020 via the
application: ‘Zoom’. We were accompanied by
the ladies of JCI Female, a fellow of JCI Unify
and our National President. The name of the
game was: 'who am I?' and we played for 2 hours
straight. It has been a while since we had such a
good laugh and so much fun together.

T
he parliamentary procedures,
such as the Robert Rules of
Order, describe different
techniques that are used during the JCI
meetings. The purpose of the Robert
Rules of Order is to provide effective
meetings. Since our observers also
attend our General Meetings, we decided
to conduct a training for them on June 24,
2020. The training was provided by
Senator Cherida Belfor via the
application: Zoom. The Senator gave an
introduction to the Robert Rules of Order
and provided some basic tools that can
help the observers to participate actively
during our meetings.
