COMM HEALTH 2240
Dr. Bush
Montgomery, Alabama
Eastside Adult Health Care Center, was founded
by Rev. E. P Wallace.
Currently operated by Mrs. Gloria Ellis, who
started as the secretary under Rev. E. P. Wallace
about 35 years ago.
Eastside is funded by the Department of Human
Resources (DHR). Even thou they are funded ,they
are still in need of financial and volunteer help.
The center provides adult day care service in
Montgomery, Alabama. The service offer organized daily
activities in a community based setting. It provide
transportation, meals and professional supervision.
Volunteers provide their service by donating meals for
special occasion.
They have pastors, state representatives and principals
from different schools to come in and speak to the seniors.
Forest Avenue School and their PTA are one of their big
supporters and sponsors, also the National Callcus and
Center on Black Aged, Inc.
Their daily routine is to have daily devotion, have a
snack, they have speakers to come in and speak with
them until lunch.+
They have leisure time where they spend time making
and creating beautiful items like, quilted
blankets, crochet blankets, scarves and etc.
The community donates items to them that is very
much needed, even thou they are funded by the state
there are still plenty of things they need .
The clients celebrate all the major holidays. Items
are donated to them by local restaurants for their
luncheons for these special days. Deborah No. 2
Eastern Star is one of many sponsors who also
donate meals to the center.
For Easter they colored eggs and for Mother’s Day
they will be receiving roses like they always do on
Mother’s Day.
My sister was the assistant secretary before she
accepted another job. I would visit her in between
classes, while visiting I would volunteer to assist
in game time with the clients and help prepare and
serve lunch.
I didn’t consider myself a volunteer because what I
did was from my heart and it made me happy just
to see them happy.
My experience volunteering at Eastside Adult
Health Care Center gives me the joy of giving
back. It allows me to appreciate others. It makes
me feel as if my purpose is to help change the lives
of our seniors by donating my time. It’s a blessing
to be able to make a difference to someone and
know your service is really truly appreciated.
