In collaboration with KOTO
International, we are proud to
announce the opening of the KOTO
Sydney restaurant and hospitality
training program in Sydney's CBD.
The program aims to empower
disadvantaged youth and better
their futures equipping them with life
and work skills in a working
hospitality environment. Trainees not
only gain work experience but also
develop valuable friendships and
self-confidence. After seeing the
successes from the training centres
in Vietnam and with youth
homelessness on the rise in Australia,
it is essential this program is funded.
Future Crew
One of the many programs A
Better Future Foundation funds is
the Future Crew program. It is a
volunteer based program designed
for university students to work on
national and international projects
during semester breaks that
support indigenous people and
their communities. This program is
an opportunity for young people to
gain worldly experiences and give
back to their communities.

June in Sydney’s CBD.
6. Driven by the belief that all people deserve to be treated equally, Aiden Massey (chairperson) and his
partner Robyn Massey started a A Better Future Foundation. The Foundation seeks to improve the lives of
young people, particularly those who come from difficult circumstances, by providing opportunities for
success through education. The KOTO Sydney hospitality training program and restaurant is a program that
aims to help disadvantaged youth through education and life-skills workshops.
What is the KOTO Sydney Hospitality Training Program?
KOTO stands for ‘Know One, Teach One’ and the KOTO Sydney restaurant and hospitality training program
is based on these core ideals. The program is a two-year course where students will learn the principles of
working in the hospitality industry. Students will gain culinary and front of house qualifications from
trained professionals in a working environment. Life-skills workshops are an important component of the
program, and will cover topics on health, personal hygiene, anger management, personal financial
budgeting, sex education, first aid, communication and interpersonal skills.
Is this program the first of its kind in Australia?
Currently there are no other culinary programs like KOTO in Australia. However, the program in Sydney will
be based on the highly successful KOTO program that began in Vietnam in 1999. Jimmy Pham AM the
founder of KOTO Vietnam had a vision to inspire underprivileged young people and give them a chance at
brighter futures through education. We have partnered with KOTO Vietnam to empower Sydney’s
disadvantaged youth, knowing that 100% of graduates from the program in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City
were employed at the end of the course
Why is this program necessary in Sydney?
The statistics surrounding youth disadvantage in Australia are highly concerning. For example:
• One in six aged 15-25 are living in poverty (ABS)
• Homelessness amongst young people has risen by 31% since 2011. (ABS)
• One in four adolescents are exposed to domestic violence (AIHW)
• One in ten young people, aged 15-24 are not in education or employment(AIHW)
How will young people be selected for the program?
Approximately forty underprivileged young people aged 16-22 years old will be recruited every six months.
Applicants will be required to attend an open day to find out more about the program. The next stage
requires applicants to fill out questionnaires, complete maths and literacy
examinations and then be interviewed. These procedures help evaluate a potential
trainee’s suitability. Successful applicants then must undergo a four-week trial period
where they are provided with accommodation, monthly allowances, uniforms, meals
and health checks. Once the candidate completes the orientation they become official
trainees. The recruitment process takes up to three months to complete.
