CHF International, Nairobi, Kenya Country Director 2004-2007
Led the start-up of CHF’s first health program in Kenya, achieving targets within the first 3 months and
ultimately reaching over >1M Kenyans with HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment services. The program
goal was to develop the capacity of community organizations to improve and expand a range of HIV/AIDS
services.
 Led and supervised the start-up of the program, growing funding from $1.3M to >$10M annually based on
quality deliverables achieved in the 1st
year;
 Recruited, hired, and trained a staff of >40 who ultimately owned and managed the program, including
leadership development and staff mentoring;
 Developed curriculum to train community health staff in delivering prevention, care and support services;
 Identified, selected, and established new offices, including procurement of equipment and supplies;
 Managed program funds, including the administration of grants and contracts to local partners in
compliance with USG rules/regulations, achieving program deliverables on-time and within budget;
 Guided the Kenya Country Team in developing organizational assessments, analysis of gaps, and the
development and implementation of capacity development strategies for local partner organizations;
 Worked directly with >45 local organizations to build on strengths and address challenges resulting in

Served as a Peace Corps Medical Officer charged with establishing and delivering medical support services for
Peace Corps Volunteers serving in a number of African countries.
 Provided medical expertise to Peace Corps programs in seven African countries, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho,
Mozambique, Namibia, and Uganda, as well as in Bulgaria;

first response and evacuation of a landmine victim in Eritrea;

Volunteers from Africa to Washington DC, often from difficult locations and in challenging conditions;
 Facilitated a Critical Incident Stress Debriefing following staff involvement in the removal of hundreds human

 Initiated a research proposal to assess high-risk behaviors (including exposure to HIV) among Volunteers;

 Initiated the development of regional medical clinics to provide routine, safe medical care to Peace Corps
Volunteers in the field;
 Facilitated the development of a Diversity/Peer Support Network;
 Provided cross-cultural instruction at the community level;
 Interviewed, hired, trained and supervised 12 office staff, including training, mentoring, and supervising of local
nursing staff in conducting physical examinations and history taking.

 Supervised a clinic that provided primary care for all farm employees and their families;
 Coordinated 12 preventative health seminars attended by approximately 600 farm employees and family
members including prevention of STI, HIV/AIDS, family planning, immunizations, nutrition, and sanitation;
 Managed budgeting and financial control for the entire farm, including preparation of all accounts, creditors,
debtors, stocks, wages, and salaries;
 Supervised 65 employees for over one year.

 Provided primary care, including evaluation and management of medical needs for boarding students and adult
staff;
 Counseled staff on contraception, alcohol abuse, and STD/HIV prevention;

World Vision, Kiwawa, Kenya Senior Nurse in Charge 1986-1988
 Provided primary care to the Pokot Tribe via a medical dispensary and helicopter clinics in an extremely remote
area of Kenya;
 Coordinated sexually transmitted infections awareness programs;
 Treated conditions included: malaria, tuberculosis, kalaazar, amebiasis, parasites, burns, schistosomiasis, gunshot
and knife wounds, and female genital mutilation;
