Dear Hiring Manager,
David was an intern in the office of Cambridge City Councillor Nadeem Mazen from September
2014 to May 2015. Under the supervision of Councillor Mazen and myself, David rapidly grew
in competence, translating his boundless enthusiasm into work of increasing sophistication. His
tenacity, capacity to learn on-the-job, and knack for finding insights into policy initiatives
through research impressed my team, and culminated in him managing the electoral campaign of
a close colleague of mine.
David started off answering emails and assisting with constituent outreach – typical intern tasks.
Within two months, David was assisting a staff member with authoring a grant proposal. David
eventually functioned as a research assistant, writing briefs, co-authoring articles, drafting
legislation, and interfacing with thought leaders and expert practitioners to expand our policy
initiatives. Most of his work was performed with minimal supervision, though David made a
point to check in regularly with Councillor Mazen and I to ensure he was kept to a rigorous
timeline.
From early June until just a few weeks ago, David was the campaign manager for Jake
Crutchfield, a colleague of Councillor Mazen’s on the Slate for Cambridge, and a candidate for
Cambridge School Committee. Jake recognized many of the same qualities I saw in David, and it
was through his work in the Councillor’s office that he made the decision to hire David. As an
outside observer, I was deeply impressed with David’s performance in a dynamic, high-pressure
role. Jake did incredible for a young, first-time candidate, and David played a big part in that.
I highly recommend David as a prospective hire, not only for the skills he brings to the table
now, but for the immense potential he displays. Please feel free to reach out by phone (610) 937-
9485 or by email (mdblakestj@gmail.com) if you need additional information or perspective.
Sincerely,
Daniel Schwarz
Chief of Staff to City Councillor Nadeem Mazen
