2. Process
• To create the first
motion poster I
sketched up a draft
on paper and
scanned it in
digitally. I put the
image into
photoshop.
3. Process
• I then drew over it
to create a cleaner
sketch with the
brush tool.
4. Process
• After cleaning up the
sketch I then coloured
and properly outlined
everything. I made each
part of the drawing on
separate layers so I
would be able to
animate it easier in after
effects. By separating
each part it allows me to
use the puppet pin tool
in after effects without it
morphing parts that
shouldn’t be morphed.
5. Process
• Then, I drew a
simple background
and coloured it. This
would be static so I
didn’t need to do
any layer splitting.
This will go above
another background
that will be a moving
city.
6. Process
• Then, I exported the
layers to after effects to
animate it. I used the
puppet pin tool as this
would let me animate
the image without
having to animate it
traditionally frame by
frame. The puppet pin
tool allows me to create
a skeleton in the image
and deform the image
by moving the pin
points.

8. Process
• To help keep organized
during production and
better keep track of all
the moving parts, I
placed each category of
the image into a
precomposition. When I
select the
precomposition it
isolates the selected
layers and allows me to
edit those layers without
other parts getting in the
way.
9. Process
• To create the next
poster, I used
mostly text so I
didn’t need to do
any work in
photoshop before
after effects. In this
poster I created a
fake neon light
sign.
10. Process
• To create the next
poster, I used
mostly text so I
didn’t need to do
any work in
photoshop before
after effects. In this
poster I created a
fake neon light
sign.
11. Process
• To start, I made a
precomposition of basic text
coloured white. This would be
the sign when the lights are
turned off. I put the text into a
precomposition to organize the
project and keep the main
composition from becoming
cluttered with identical looking
text layers. Another benefit of
precompositions is that I can
edit the grouped layers as a
whole – which is particularly
beneficial for this poster as I
worked with a lot of layers.
12. Process
• To create the look of a
neon sign turned off, I
used different effects. I
used the tint effect to
darken the colours and
limit the maximum
white level. Then, I
added the Bevel and
Emboss layer style to
make the text look 3d.
This emulated the look
of the glass tubes in
actual neon signs and
looked realistic.

14. Process
• After creating the bottom
layer of the sign, I
duplicated the
precomposition. This group
of text would be the neon
sign with the lights turned
on. First, I changed the
colours of all the text to
different neon colours. I
then added an outer glow
to the each of the text
layers to make it look like
there is actual light emitting
from the text.
15. Process
• Then, I created the
middle layer of text
which was to make
the lighting look
more realistic,
diffusing the
different colours of
light together via
the gaussian blur
effect.

17. Process
• Then, to animate
the text I used the
typewriter
animator. This
animator makes
the text look like its
slowly lighting up
like a neon sign.
18. Process
• To create the
background I used
the tint effect and
adjusted the
curves.
19. Process
• For the last poster I
mixed the
techniques that I
used in earlier
posters. This
includes the neon
text and hand
drawn digital art.
20. Process
• To create the effect
of the smoking gun
I used a video
overlay of smoke
and set the layer
style to screen.
