2. Process
• For my experiment, I
wanted to try
animating still images.
I found a still image
from a comic and
decided to turn it into
an animated music
poster. The elements I
chose to animate were
parts that are
supposed to emulate
movement, such as the
cape and the wind.
3. Process
• First, before I started
animating I first had to
cut out each part I
wanted to move. I did
this in photoshop
using the polygon
lasso. Cutting each
part out and having
the parts on individual
layers allows me to
move each part on its
own.
4. Process
• Once I cut out all the parts I
needed, I then had to go
onto the base layer and
filled in the spaces beneath
the moving parts. This is so
the moving parts have a
background to move
against, instead of the
original uncut image or a
transparent space. To
recreate texturing and
details on the empty spaces
I used the clone stamp tool,
and cloned from
surrounding areas.
5. Process
• After preparing everything, I
then moved all the layers
into an After Effects
composition. The first thing
I animated was the wind, as
all I needed to do was use
the wave warp effect. The
wave warp distorts an asset
so that it moves like waves.
I adjusted it to move
naturally like wind, and then
did the same for the cape as
it moves in the wind.
6. Process
• Next, I added static
text to the
composition. I used
the title of the series
along with the logo
behind it in red. Since
my experiment is
trying to make the
image look like a
movie poster, a title
and date should be
necessary.
7. Process
• To animate the right arm, I
used the Puppet Pin tool in
after effects. This creates a
moveable skeleton from a
still image that can be
distorted and moved
around. This is a much
better way to animate the
right arm than splitting the
arm into two separate
layers and only rotating the
forearm. The puppet pin
allows much smoother
movement to be made.
8. Process
• Then, to make the
poster more visually
interesting, I added
a snow particle
overlay. This further
emphasizes the
movement of wind
in the image.
9. Process
• Finally, to add
more colour to the
piece I added a
solid red
foreground with
the overlay
blending mode.
10. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you
include in your final product?
– In my final product I will include elements like the
puppet pin tool, as I found it useful in allowing me
to create smooth movements. I will also use after
effects for production of my final product as I
found it the easiest to use.
