WHAT IS THE SCRIPT FOR?
Film 4 Productions
BRIEF & WHAT YOU WILL PRODUCE
Film 4 have asked us to create a script based on our original ideas of our film. We have been
asked to develop the narrative, genre, and language to target the audience we established in our
campaign. The audience required will consist of both male and females aged from late teens to
their thirties. The film is required to have a diverse cast with both genders represented, and the
main protagonists are in their early twenties. I have met this requirement since my main
protagonist is a white man and my other main protagonist, Valerie, is a black woman in her early
20s. The villain is also mixed race. Film 4 Producers are aiming for an aged 15 certificate to
entice a mass audience. I have slightly met this requirement, since I aimed my script and film to
entice audiences aged in their mid-teens to mid-thirties.
CONTENT
My script is about retired wizard, Calum, is forced to go back in time accompanied by a witch friend,
Valerie, after the Great Old Wizard informs him, that evil is about to enter their lives. To prevent it, the
two must go back in time to find old artifacts that will free the Great Old Wizard from imprisonment that
the evil has placed him in (the Great Old Wizard has been trapped in a mirror world- the only way he can
communicate with anyone is through mirrors, he is lucky to have connected with the main character). The
main character is resentful to be involved with magic, due to losing his wife in the hands of the Villain,
Chailer, an evil wizard who was a student of the Great Old Wizard but grew greedy and selfish and
wanted all the magic for himself. After hearing that The Great Old Wizard is going to pass along his wand
and title to Calum, his other student, Chailer kills Stella, Calum’s wife and flees. He traps the Great Old
Wizard in the mirror real years later, after he trained for many years and became just as powerful as the
GOW. The magic of the witches and wizards start to fade as the main character loses hope and begins to
give up, the memories of his wife being too strong and sad for him to carry on. He leaves the witch friend
and goes back to his home, meanwhile the magic world is falling apart. After some persuasion from
Valerie, and Stella visiting him as a ghost, Calum finally comes to his senses and defeats the evil, sets the
Great old wizard free and saves magic and magic people from extinction. Calum is then knighted “The
Great One”, and Valerie becomes his right-hand witch.
GENRE
The genre of my script is fantasy comedy. It is fantasy due to the magic and wizards involved,
and my script includes modern day comedy that will be appealing to the target audience.
LANGUAGE TO BE USED & WHY
2. Unit 22: Task Two
Generate ideas and plan the script for a media product, in response to a client brief.
The language used in my script will be both elaborate and restricted code. The reason why my
script will use elaborate code is because the dialogue I use in my script for the characters is
informal, for example I have used phrases like “You know what I mean” and “right?”. The reason
why restricted code is used in my script is due to the formality used in my actions – my sentences
are fuller and more detailed.
My movie will entertain audiences, since there is no educational information included and it does
not advertise anything.
The language I am using points towards a fantasy, comedy type of genre, due to the modern-day
humor I include in my script. I also mention things associated with magic like wizards, wands
ect.
I am targeting my target audience by using humor that is associated with the target age, which is
early 20s and teenagers. The language I have used is also informal, since I have used phrases
such as “right?” and “you know what I mean”. This type of language is more commonly used
within the age groups of 16-24, therefore attracting my target audience. In my script, one of my
characters mentioned Hogwarts, which is a school for witches and wizard – by mentioning this
fictional school, I capture the attention of my target audience, people who enjoy fantasy and
comedy films.
NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
My narrative structure is going to be non-linear. The reason behind this is due to the flashbacks I
have included. It is also going to be a 3-act structure narrative – it has a beginning, dilemma and
end.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Calum Willer
Before his wife died, Calum was an outgoing, work-orientated nice man who adored his
wife and his career, which was a very intelligent wizard. But after the passing of Stella, he
turned into a moody, obnoxious, deadpan and straight up rude person. He is not as
friendly as he used to be, and he quit wizarding to work in a boring office job.
He is insecure and head-strong, but still very witty and a good leader.
His outgoing personality returns later in the film due to finding joy in magic again and
getting closure from Stella.
He is white, 6’1 with brown curly hair which goes a bit frizzier after Stella’s passing. He
wears suits with boring ties for work, or he wears an oversized t-shirt and plaid bottoms
for bed. He wears circular glasses which he constantly pushes up his nose.
He lives in the same house him and Stella lived in, a little cottage in Winchester which
seems to have turned very grey since Stella passed. (Colors get warmer and brighter when
Calum gets closure and finds joy in wizarding again.)
He is British and both of his parents passed away. He is close with Stella’s mother
Angela, who is in a much better place than Calum is.

Teenagers
Valerie Oungele
Valerie is a loving, friendly, and sweet girl who is incredibly optimistic and loves to help
people. She lives in a little flat in Brighton with her girlfriend. She does not have any
contact with her parents due to her life choices. She is a student at the Magic Academy
and is an incredibly bright witch who is very good at memorizing fun facts which will
have no use to her. Although Calum’s personality clashes with her loving and nice one,
she doesn’t let it get the best of her and tries to keep the faith and hope alive for both.
Even though Calum gives up and he criticizes Valerie for her optimism, and they split
ways due to Calum’s unfairness. Valerie comes back for him and gives him tough love,
which he accepts and together they save the world.
Valerie is from Nigeria, she is 5’7 and her hair is always in gorgeous butterfly braids with
star charms intertwined in them. She is always wearing blue and purple, which represent
her personality. Blue represents loyalty and trust, and honesty. Purple represents honor,
which she carries around since she has been given a very important job to do. Purple is
also associated with spirituality, which Valerie loves.

LOCATION & STYLE MOODBOARD
The color aesthetics I am going for are blues, golds and greys and some whites. The reason I
chose blue is because it is associated with not only fantasy films (such as the first Harry Potter,
Enchanted, The Hobbit), but it represents mystery and harmony. I chose gold as well because it is
a color associated with magic and happiness. I am going for a mysterious type of vibe with my
mood board, nothing is clear, apart from the magic and wizardry, due to the wands. I wanted an
earthy and witchy vibe to go with my mood board, hence the potions and leaves, and wooded
areas.
ANGLE OF ARTICLE
I have targeted my target audience by using a diverse cast of different genders and sexualities, so
that people can watch my film, and everyone will feel included and can relate to a character on
screen. I have also used language that is popular amongst my target audience of teenagers and
young adults, like dead pan, modern day humor and sarcasm. I have also used informal language
so my young audience will want to watch my film since they can relate to the characters on
screen talking the same as they do. I will not show any bias, as some audiences may be against
my bias and will not want to watch my film. Film 4’s ethos is for the audience to be both male
and female from late teens to early thirties, and a diverse cast. The characters I have written
represent the ethos of film 4 since I have represented both genders of the targeted age and my
main 2 characters are white and black, which attract the target audience and complies with film 4
ethos.
FORMAT & LAYOUT CONVENTIONS
4. Unit 22: Task Two
Generate ideas and plan the script for a media product, in response to a client brief.
The scriptwriting conventions in the UK are things like dialogue, character names in bold, and
courier font. The reason courier font is used in scripts is so the words are perfectly aligned. The
reason that characters names are bolded in scripts is so the director can see who the featured
characters are so they can think about casting. Numbers must also be labelled at the top corner of
the script pages, so the director knows the order of the script. Fade out and fade ins are added, so
people who read the script knows when a scene has ended and when a new one comes in. In
scripts, scene headings are used in every scene where a different location is used, so the reader
knows where the scene is set.
TYPEFACE
Courier is the standard typeface for film.
TARGET AUDIENCE
My primary audiences are those who I have targeted the film at – the target audience. I have
targeted them through creating characters that use the same language as then, like sarcasm and
dead pan witty audiences, since my target audience is ages late teens to early thirties. I have also
targeted my primary audiences by having a diverse cast regarding race, gender and sexuality. My
secondary audience are those who I have not particularly targeted my film at, like audiences
younger than teenagers and adults above their early thirties. Although I have not particularly
targeted them, they will still be targeted since I have a variety of representation in my film, which
my primary audience will still notice. My genre choice will most likely target my primary
audience as well, as younger audience more commonly enjoy fantasy films about wizards and
witches compared to older audiences. However, my narrative choice will target my secondary
audience due to the modern-day humor and sarcasm I have used, along with the elaborate code,
which is more popular among younger audiences whom I have targeted.
