 We use Reported Speech to say what somebody said before.
 Some changes are produced in:
Verb tenses
Modal verbs and imperatives

3. Reported Speech 1: Verb tenses
Tenses Direct Speech Reported Speech
Present simple Past simple ‘I live in Berlin.’ She said she lived in Berlin.
Present continuous Past

‘I’m watching TV.’ He said he was watching TV.
Present erfect Past perfect ‘I’ve seen the film.’ She said she had seen the film.
Past simple Past perfect ‘I missed the concert.’ He told me he had missed the
concert.
Will would ‘I’ll phone you soon.’ She promised she would phone
me soon.

imperatives

Can could ‘I can undestand German.’ She said she could understand
German.
May might ‘I may give the book to John.’ Sam suggested he might give
the book to John.
Must had to ‘I must cook dinner.’ Tanya said she had to cook
dinner.
Infinitive ‘Fetch that book!’ She asked him to fetch the
Negative infinitive ‘Don’t look out of the window!’ She told him not to look out of
the window.
