 G324: Advanced Portfolio in Media - EAR 
 G325: Critical Perspectives in Media – EAR/KNG

 Coursework unit 
 Media portfolio combining two or more media 
 Detailed research, planning and evaluation in 
electronic format using a range of presentation 
techniques. 
 Development of skills from Foundation Portfolio
G325 
 Written exam 
 Theoretical Evaluation of Production and study of 
Contemporary Media Issues. 
 Section A 
 Describe and evaluate skills development in production 
work 
 Select one production to evaluate in relation to a media 
concept. 
 Section B 
 Choose one topic 
 Demonstrate understanding of contemporary issue 
through range of texts, institutions, audiences and 
debates.
Purpose of unit 
 Assesses: 
 ability to plan and construct media products using 
appropriate technical and creative skills 
(AO3) – 60 marks 
 application of knowledge and understanding in 
evaluating own work, showing how meanings and 
responses are created (AO2) – 20 marks 
 ability to undertake, apply and present appropriate 
research 
(AO4) – 20 marks
Requirements 
 engage with contemporary media technologies 
 develop own skills in these technologies 
 develop presentation skills required for higher 
study and workplace.
Outcomes 
 Response to brief leading to: 
 media portfolio, comprising main and ancillary texts 
 electronic presentation of research, planning and 
evaluation
A2 Media Portfolio 
 Combination of the following: 
 Video 
 Print 
 Main task - video (allow skills development) 
 Ancillary tasks ensure opportunity to explore 
different medium
Brief – Music Package 
 Promotion package for release of an album, 
to include music promo video, together with: 
 a cover as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package) 
 a magazine advertisement for the digipak 
 You can use a © track but… 
 Permission must be sought from the artist for use 
of the audio track
A2 Evaluation 
 Evaluate work electronically 
 Guided by key questions 
 May be done collectively for a group production or individually 
 Suitable formats for evaluation are: 
 A podcast 
 DVD extras 
 A blog 
 A PowerPoint 
 Not simply a written essay 
 Potential of format chosen should be exploited through use 
of images, audio, video and links to online resources. 
 May be supported by other forms such as audio or 
videotaped presentations.
Links with the Exam 
 No formal individual essay component 
 In final exam, write about work undertaken 
from this unit and from AS unit 
 Undertake some form of written reflection as 
practice for the exam
Exam Section A 
 Theoretical Evaluation of Production 
 Two compulsory questions: 
 1 requires you to describe and evaluate skills 
development over the course of production work, 
from Foundation Portfolio to Advanced Portfolio 
 2 asks you to identify one production and 
evaluate it in relation to one theoretical concept
General Guidance 
 Prepare for exam alongside production work 
 Question 1(a) directly requests evaluation of how 
media production skills have developed from AS to A2 
 Regularly ‘audit’ skills development 
 Question for 1(b) different in focus each year 
 Draws from a list of possible concepts 
 Either: 
 prepare to answer on more than one production (so you 
can choose production in response to specific demands 
of question) 
 prepare evaluation of one production which covers all of 
the possible concepts 
 Consider both during planning, development and 
evaluation stages

 Describe and evaluate skills development over course of 
production work, from Foundation to Advanced Portfolio.

A2 Media Portfolio Action Plan

  • 1. A2 - G324: Advanced Portfolio in Media RE-INTRODUCTION
  • 2. Preparing Minds  What three things do I want to achieve this year NOT including grades?
  • 3. Learning Intentions  I will review the requirements of A2 Media  I will review the progress I have made so far  I will create an action plan for coming term
  • 4. Success Criteria  I will be clear about what is required of me  I will understand how to meet those requirements  I will complete an appropriate action plan
  • 5. What does A2 Media Involve?  G324: Advanced Portfolio in Media - EAR  G325: Critical Perspectives in Media – EAR/KNG
  • 6. G324  Coursework unit  Media portfolio combining two or more media  Detailed research, planning and evaluation in electronic format using a range of presentation techniques.  Development of skills from Foundation Portfolio
  • 7. G325  Written exam  Theoretical Evaluation of Production and study of Contemporary Media Issues.  Section A  Describe and evaluate skills development in production work  Select one production to evaluate in relation to a media concept.  Section B  Choose one topic  Demonstrate understanding of contemporary issue through range of texts, institutions, audiences and debates.
  • 8. Purpose of unit  Assesses:  ability to plan and construct media products using appropriate technical and creative skills (AO3) – 60 marks  application of knowledge and understanding in evaluating own work, showing how meanings and responses are created (AO2) – 20 marks  ability to undertake, apply and present appropriate research (AO4) – 20 marks
  • 9. Requirements  engage with contemporary media technologies  develop own skills in these technologies  develop presentation skills required for higher study and workplace.
  • 10. Outcomes  Response to brief leading to:  media portfolio, comprising main and ancillary texts  electronic presentation of research, planning and evaluation
  • 11. A2 Media Portfolio  Combination of the following:  Video  Print  Main task - video (allow skills development)  Ancillary tasks ensure opportunity to explore different medium
  • 12. Brief – Music Package  Promotion package for release of an album, to include music promo video, together with:  a cover as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package)  a magazine advertisement for the digipak  You can use a © track but…  Permission must be sought from the artist for use of the audio track
  • 13. A2 Evaluation  Evaluate work electronically  Guided by key questions  May be done collectively for a group production or individually  Suitable formats for evaluation are:  A podcast  DVD extras  A blog  A PowerPoint  Not simply a written essay  Potential of format chosen should be exploited through use of images, audio, video and links to online resources.  May be supported by other forms such as audio or videotaped presentations.
  • 14. Links with the Exam  No formal individual essay component  In final exam, write about work undertaken from this unit and from AS unit  Undertake some form of written reflection as practice for the exam
  • 15. Exam Section A  Theoretical Evaluation of Production  Two compulsory questions:  1 requires you to describe and evaluate skills development over the course of production work, from Foundation Portfolio to Advanced Portfolio  2 asks you to identify one production and evaluate it in relation to one theoretical concept
  • 16. General Guidance  Prepare for exam alongside production work  Question 1(a) directly requests evaluation of how media production skills have developed from AS to A2  Regularly ‘audit’ skills development  Question for 1(b) different in focus each year  Draws from a list of possible concepts  Either:  prepare to answer on more than one production (so you can choose production in response to specific demands of question)  prepare evaluation of one production which covers all of the possible concepts  Consider both during planning, development and evaluation stages
  • 17. Question 1a  Describe and evaluate skills development over course of production work, from Foundation to Advanced Portfolio.  Focus on skills development  Adapt this to one or two specific production practices:  Digital Technology  Creativity  Research and planning  Post-production  Using conventions from real media texts  Questions posed using one or two of these categories  Where relevant work produced outside the course, free to additionally refer to this experience
  • 18. Question 1b  Select one production and evaluate in relation to one media concept:  Genre  Narrative  Representation  Audience  Media language
  • 19. AO4 Evaluation – Questions  Presented via commentary, PowerPoint and supporting notes:  How do products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?  How effective is the combination of main product and ancillary texts?  What have you learned from audience feedback?  How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
