11. Case Studies
Jeremy Clarkson
• He is a TV presenter and used to present a BBC TV show called Top Gear, which was a massive
hit until he got sacked. Unfortunately the show has gone downhill ever since the show ended
without the trio in 2015.
• He was born in Doncaster and his mother was a teacher, whereas his father was a salesman.
• Clarkson’s first job was being a traveller salesmen for his parents’ business selling Paddington
Bear toys.
• He later on started to train to become a journalist, writing books and columns in the daily
newspapers. Most of his books were about cars and other subjects.
• Clarkson’s first major television role came as one of the presenters on the British motoring
programme Top Gear, from 27th October 1988 to 3rd February 2000. that was the earlier
format, then he went onto a new format on the 20th October 2002 to 8th March 2015. He was
joined by two co-presenters James May and Richard Hammond. He is credited for turning Top
Gear to one of the most watched shows on the BBC.
• He also presented the show Robot Wars, but only for a short period of time.
• He owns or has owned several cars, for example;
Volvo XC90, Range Rover TDV8 Vogue and many others like Ford GT and Lamborghini Gallardo.
• Also whilst on Top Gear, the trio of Clarkson, Hammond and May did certain challenges
involving cars and dangerous experiments. Some challenges will be getting to certain places or
finding something in certain cars. These can be cars that are average or even below average
and not fit for purpose. They do these challenges all over the world and show everybody
watching at home what they got up to.
• After leaving Top Gear, Clarkson and the rest of the amazing trio started a series on Amazon
Video called ‘The Grand Tour’. Each week they will be in a different location and will be
available worldwide in 2016.
12. Case Studies
Gary Lineker
• Gary Lineker is now a retired professional footballer and presents Match of the Day on the
BBC. He is also included in the Walker Crisps adverts.
• Lineker was born in Leicester. He attended school and played for both the cricket and
football team. When he left school with four O levels a teacher said he wouldn’t make a
living out of concentrating on football all the time. Later on after he left school he joined
Leicester’s youth academy in 1976.
• He began his career at Leicester and stayed there for 7 years and moved onto Everton, then
Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur and Nagoya Grampus Eight and then retired.
• He also had an international career with the English national team. He helps England get to
the semi-finals of the world cup in 1990…
• Following retirement from professional football, he developed a career in the media. He
has been on plenty of sport-related shows and has been really successful on the likes of
Match of the Day and sport shows that talk about legends or certain sporting events. From
his popularity he has been able to appear in a series of commercials for Walkers since 1995.
• He established his own production company called Goalhanger Films Ltd. And the company
(May 2015) produced a 60-minute long documentary presented by himself and it was
called Gary Lineker on the Road to FA Cup Glory for the BBC.
• Lineker also has a wife and kids. Because one of his children survived leukemia at a young
age, Lineker now supports children’s cancer charities.
• Gary invested into his supported club Leicester City as they were going into administration.
The club was eventually saved from liquidation because of people such as Gary investing
big amounts of money. He gave 5 million to help rescue them and hoped others would do
the same, which they did. Lineker is now honorary Vice President of Leicester City F.C.
