2. What?
• We have decided to produce a short film. The genre is
drama, as we wanted to try something completely new and
opposite to the horror movie opening we did last year.
• Taking in elements from our film research, we want it to
have an artist feel, like from the opening of Juno. It
is stop start animation, with a sketched out style. And
in the Submarine trailer, how the letters come up one by
accompanied with the appropriate sound.
• Because it’s a short film we want to think deeply about
the shots that we take and use. We want the shots to
represent the character and what he is going though. By
using angles from the back, and side of the character as
if the camera is in side his head, so we can show his
perspective.
• The film is about a boy struggling with schizophrenia.
The film depicts the world inside his head. We meet his
friends and family becoming non-existent. The audience
is taken on a journey with Sam, and his struggle.
3. Who?
• We have decided on a main male character, who we will
follow throughout the day. The character has a mental
heath disorder.
• He is 17 years old, as schizophrenia is often diagnosed
at this age. He is an only child, and lives with his mum
and step-dad. The name of the character is Sam Tyler.
Our audience:
• Aimed at 16-25 year olds as this is the age range that
is being diagnosed with mental heath issues. We have
rated it 12 as there will be no gory scenes of violence.
However some scenes might be distressing scenes to
younger audiences, as there will be adult language.
4. Why?
• Recently, the news had been flooded with mental heath
stories.
• And we found that there is a higher percentage of male
cases and diagnosis, than there is female. This group is
not supported, or represented correctly in the media.
• There is often an offensive sigma that is associated
with mental heath. In this short film, we aim to re-
educated society about metal heath and the real
struggles that are faced.
5. Where?
Locations:
• The film will start in his house, specifically bed room.
As the audience will not know at the start his medical
history, this scene will need to be a stereotypically
“normal” teenage awakening. We are also planning to film
inside a school, to show him in this environment and how
he reacts with his friends. Other shots may include
footage on a train/train station or bus and a beach.
• Beaches are often calm and beautiful places, so this
style of scene will be inside his head, a sort of happy
place.
• There is no main location as we want to get across that
Sam has no place he truly fits in (according to
society)/feels safe.
6. When?
• The film will be based in the present, this means that
we can make it more relatable to the people who are
watching it.
• It also means we don’t have to be concern about age
pacific technology or clothing. For example if the film
was based in the past or future, we would have to find
old technology or make up and create new ones.
