Group treatment
1. • Eden Lake
• Blair Witch Project
• Scream 4
• Stereotypical characters
• Sense of realistic setting (isolated)
• Chase scene to build tension
• Weapons (for the antagonist)
2. We had the idea of using local park „Boggart Hole Clough‟ as it‟s close to
members of the group. It also has a range of places in the park we could
use for filming of a trailer, and it also fits with the generic conventions
to follow as it looks isolated. This choice of location also fits in with
plot, Boggart Hole Clough looks like a realistic place for a camping trip
to take place, and also serves as an ideal place for antagonist Stephen to
carry out his revenge…in somewhere isolated.
3. Props
• Camera (handheld)
• Camping equipment (torches/tents/bags) Costume
• Weapons: (for the • Everyday clothing to add a sense
antagonist to plot his revenge) of realism. For e.g. Jeans, hoodies,
- Rope
- Hammer } Realistic tools from „home‟ trainers.
• Antagonist all in black to reflect
- Newspaper
his „dark personality‟.
4. • Trailer opens up with Stephen (the antagonist) looking through old
photos, and produces a newspaper claiming teenage girl „Blair
Albright‟ committed suicide from bullying.
• Cuts to next shot of Stephen angry, with clenched fists, who then
puts tools(from home maybe?) into a bag.
• From a hidden point of view (as though it‟s Stephen from behind
trees) we hear a group of girls setting up a camping trip and coming
across the newspaper Stephen planted to then go on and mock it.
• Fast-paced chase scene including attacks (such as rope around the
neck, chasing the girls etc.)
• As the trailer is coming to an end, we get the emotional side to the
characters (one crying, one saying “I‟m sorry, I‟m sorry” etc.)
• Cuts to a black screen, and then we see Stephen‟s face in torchlight
as though he‟s still in the woods, and then says “This is for you
Blair” (revealing Blair was his sister).
5. The main character of the film. A typical popular teenager who
is selfish and bossy, and chooses who her friends are. Also the
reason for Blair‟s death, and doesn‟t think twice about how her
selfish ways affect others.
The quiet one of the group who gets bossed around by the other
two in the group, more from Alice. As she is the quiet one of the
group, she is caught up in the bullying and death of Blair, but
none of it is her fault, although she will be probably blamed.
The best friend of Alice, the one who follows Alice in everything she
does and usually gets caught up with what‟s happening. She
contributes to bossing Chloe around, but only to go along with what
Alice is doing.
After still not being able to get over his sister committing suicide
because she got bullied, mentally unstable Stephen feels it is his
place to go and serve the justice he feels is right, and takes the
opportunity of the girls‟ camping trip to do so.
6. We want to use torchlight in our trailer to go with the theme of the hand held
camera an the camping trip.
We want to use the following shots:
• Close-ups: To show facial expressions and things we want to focus on –e.g.
close up of newspaper to show Stephen has put it there
• Medium shots: To show important elements of background we want to focus
on or setting.
• Long shots: to get a sense of the whole action e.g. the girls running away.
For sound in our trailer we want to build the tension and pace as it leads up to
the chase scene which we will create on sound editing programs. We also want
to keep with the handheld theme so we want diegetic sounds to be included
such as wood snapping, winds and footsteps.
7. We have some ideas on how we want to edit our trailer. We want
to tell the story/motivations of the antagonist through a
montage sequence of a fast pace so we can emphasise the story
and fit it well together with the chase scene we want to put next
which will be very fast paced to create the tension and fear we
intend to.
For the typography, we have decided to keep it at a minimal
level, as to accompany the action in the trailer, we are having
Stephen doing a voiceover to help tell the story and add to the
atmosphere, and also conform to the generic conventions of
horror trailers.
As a group, we like the idea of using a font such as this, as
Chelsey used it on her poster, and we think it looks
effective. We will add extra effects to it for our trailer, but
keep the typography quite simple.
8. We decided our target audience for our film trailer would be most suitable
and effective for the age range for 15-24. This is effective as from Pearl and
Dean‟s website, this age range has the most cinema attendances, and with
this the most percent(33%) of people engage with cinema positively from a
survey from Pearl and Dean.
Also, with the nature of the trailer, which
shows subtle violence (rope going
around a neck) and the antagonist
having purposes to attack, this is suitable
for an audience of this age.
As the plot of the film includes teenage characters going on a camping trip,
this works well as a teenage/young adult audience will be familiar with the
situation and hopefully understand the realism, which is what we want to
scare the audience, and make them feel as though this could happen to
anybody.
