The document discusses macro and micro decisions made in developing a film trailer for a horror genre project. At the macro level, some key decisions were to make the genre a horror film, have a female villain which challenges conventions, and set it in an everyday residential area rather than isolated location. Micro decisions focused on specific technical elements like using dark lighting, jump scares, eerie music, and handheld camera shots to make the trailer scary. Costume choices were also micro decisions that supported the macro concepts, with the female villain dressed in all white and the lazy male hero in baggy clothes.
2. Macro decisions are all of the big factors that go into making a film or in this case a film
trailer. These ideas/decisions form the whole of the product, this could range from main
points of the storyline to what the characters are called or what they do to effect the film.
Macro decisions gives the product direction. So one macro decision was that we (the
group making the film trailer) wanted to make the genre a horror film trailer. This decision
was based upon the way we could follow the simple conventions of the horror genre but
also that we could challenge the conventions by having a girl play the villain. That leads
me on to another macro decision that we made and that was to make a girl the villain in
the story, this is challenging the conventions of horror because usually women in horror
films are percieved to be more vunrable that other characters. This gives our horror film
trailer more uniqueness and a unique selling point. We have also decided to have one of
the heroes in the movie (Logan Thompson) be a really laid back guy who was just really
lazy. This idea came to us because we didn’t want a hero were they were already brave
and courgous. This means we can see what new charactistics someone can develop
when their own life is in jeopardy. Finally one more macro decision that was made was
that we didn’t want to film it in a isolated location. Although a isolated location is very
creepy we want to film in a build up area, by doing this we will make the audience relate to
their own homes, through doing this it makes the film feel like it's a natural everyday
occurrence which makes the audience feel like it could happen to them.
MACRO DECISIONS
3. MICRO DECISIONS
Micro decisions are all the little decisions that are put into products that form he macro
decisions. Essentially these are all of the little details that go into the product. So micro
decisions could range from the costumes to the camera shots and angles. The genre
we've gone with is horror but micro decisions need to be made that macro decision work.
So some of the micro decisions we have made are as follows: we're going to include a lot
of dark lighting in the shots, We're going to include jumpscares and loud noises (like
screams, doors slamming shut ect.), eery music is going to be included in some parts of
the trailer and creepy sound effects, we're going to use a lot of hand held camera shots.
All of these tiny details are all going to add up to make our horror trailer more scary. The
costumes we use are another lot of micro decisions that we make to help some of our
macro decisions. One of the macro decisions we made was to make a girl the villain, she
is supernatural and possessed, so we want a costume that is creepy that fits the
characteristics of this character. This charcter is going to be dressed fully in white because
it's eery but represents ghostly spirits and sometims dead (refuring to the phrase white
light at the end of the tunnel). The other macro decision I talked about was the lazy hero.
This character will be wearing joggers and a baggy top, these clothes are usually
associated with when people have a lazy day on the sofa or they don't really care about
they're appearance just as long as they are comfortable, this links with the character very
well and further shows that this character is very lazy.
