3. • MARITIME AWARD
The Department of Transport has identified and committed itself to awarding the most prestigious achievers in the Maritime Industry. The purpose
of the Maritime Awards was to create an awareness of those persons and organizations that are upholding the Government’s National Policies such
as Black Economic Empowerment, Employment Equity, Skills Development and in general making initiatives towards ensuring a better life for all
South African’s. The intention of the Department of Transport was to celebrate such achievements at a forum where the Maritime Industry is able to
witness and bear testimony to stakeholders and role players who are committed to Government’s objectives.
Chris Magagula “Chris” has on two consecutive years been awarded the prestigious Best Managed Maritime Business Enterprise Award for Black-
owned Maritime Business on the 28th of October 2004 and again on the 28th October 2005 by the Minister of Transport. This was part of the
Ministerial Achiever’s Award ceremony held at a Gala Dinner at the International Convention Centre Cape Town and at the International Convention
Centre Durban, respectively.
Wabona Group was the proud recipient of the 2012/2013 Maritime Industry New Comer Award presented by Smit Amandla Marine at the SAMSA
awards ceremony held on the 20th of April 2013 in Cape Town. The event, held to celebrate contributions to the South African Maritime Industry, was
a culmination of a nationwide nomination process.
The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), in collaboration with key industry partners sponsored this black tie evening that took place.
The New Comer award is to recognise an organisation that has successfully overcome barriers, often limiting new entrants, in the maritime Industry.
• BLACK ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT - MARITIME CHARTER
Chris was one of the key players which crafted the Maritime Transport & Services Industry Black Economic Empowerment Charter (MT&SI) under the
auspices of the National Department of Transport. The MT&SI Sub-Sector Code for BBBEE was subsequently Gazetted on the 21 August 2009 under
Government Gazette No. 32511
Chris chaired the Implementation Task Working Group of the MT&SI BEE Charter. He was also tasked with arranging the Maritime Transport BEE
Indaba at the ICC–Durban. This was attended by the National Minister of Transport and the Minister of Public Enterprise.
Chris was also tasked to arrange the signing ceremony of the Maritime Transport & Services Industry Black Economic Empowerment Charter at the
Royal Hotel, Durban on the 10th of December 2003 . Chris also hosted the Maritime Transport Industry Breakfast at Zimbali Country Club in Ballito on
the 31st October 2005. The breakfast was aimed at increasing the awareness and promoting BEE transformation within the Maritime Transport
Industry. MT&SI Sub-Sector Code for BBBEE was Gazetted on the 21 August 2009 under Government Gazette No. 32511
Chris serves as one of the faces of the MT&SI BEE Charter. He was appointed by the MT&SI Steering Committee to be a Board Member of the
Maritime Transport and Services BEE Company (Section 21 – Non Profit).

Black Economic Empowerment
• Chris Magagula is a signatory to the “Maritime Transport & Services Industry BEE Charter which was signed on the 10th of December 2003 in Durban.
Wabona Logistics believes that BEE is an economic and social imperative and support the initiatives taken by both the Department of Transport and
the Department of Trade and Industry in assisting the industry to address the inequalities of the past.
• Chris on behalf of Wabona Group is a member of Umyezane Maritime BEE Steering Committee under the auspices of the MEC of KZN Economics
Development & Tourism, Hon Mike Mabuyakhulu.
