This project summary covers a client project evaluation for a marketing project. Key points:
- The client being the author's mother made communication easy but limited the author's ability to provide honest feedback or say no to the mother's requests.
- Time management was an issue as the author got behind schedule and could have done more with earlier planning and organization.
- While communication with the mother/client was easy due to their close relationship, the author was also afraid to disagree with the mother's ideas.
- The final marketing leaflet met the basic requirements but lacked photos as requested, though the client was understanding of the limitations.
- Working for others as a freelancer doesn't appeal to the
2. Constraints
This project has been quite easy for me because my client is my mother
and she had no trouble telling me what she wanted to see as an
outcome. I was also able to ask questions and get straight and honest
answers.
The only problems I had were with the photography side of things. I
didn’t really have the time because I was always busy outside of college
and also wasn’t given permission to photograph any of the clients or
my mother’s work. There was also issues with the fact that it was my
mother and I couldn’t exactly say no to what she wanted even if I
thought it would impact my grade. For example, the excessive
information printed in the leaflet.
3. Project Management
I think I did everything a bit too late as I could have started earlier and
done more practical work and then maybe even have taken some
photographs, in my spare time. I could have also made more, for
example a business card or a poster, which is what I originally planned
to do. However, I didn’t organise enough.
I think I did well with completing the brief work in detail and making
the planning as clear and straightforward, in the form of words and
pictures. It was all just down to lack of organisation.
4. Time Management
Like I said before, I didn’t organise properly and time management
plays a key element as part of that. I have behind, significantly, to the
point where if I had worked harder I could have got a better grade and
overall my work would have been completed, not only to a higher
standard but also on time.
I also haven’t really thought about the fact that this is the last project
and I won’t have a lot of time to improve, if I have any at all. So, what I
do now will be what I have to hand in.
5. Communication
This was really easy for me because I see my client at home, everyday,
and I can discuss this with her whenever I see her (every evening). Also,
because we are so close, I can tell her what I think will and wont work
and be completely honest, as I have experience with design and
format.
Then again, I have also been afraid to say things because I don’t want
to offend or upset her when hearing her ideas and disagreeing.
Because she is my mother, she also has the opportunity to say no to
any of my ideas unlike a client I barely know.
6. Requirements
I managed to make a leaflet for my client, which was the priority. The
leaflet didn’t fully meet the criteria since it didn’t have actual
photographs. The reason that my client would have liked to include real
pictures is because then she could show off her work and people could
see that her business was legitimate. However, my client is
understanding and appreciates my work. She has also said that she
would like to use it and print a few copies.
7. What have I learnt?
Unlike some of the other people in my class, I have been fortunate to
have my mother as my chosen client. Therefore, I am unable to
appreciate how difficult this process has been for them. Especially since
they don’t fully know their clients and will struggle to understand their
needs. However, I have been able to perceive this from a business point
of view and working as a freelancer, producing someone else's work,
isn’t something that appeals to me.
I have also learnt that there are expectations to be met and without
meeting these standards that clients want, actual freelancers may
struggle to make a living with a bad reputation.
