2. What is Nanoscience?
• Nanoscience is about the Phenomena that occur in systems (structures)
with nanometer dimensions.
• In 1959, Richard Feynman gave a talk to the American Physical Society
in which he talk about the consequences of Measuring and Manipulating
materials at the nanoscale.

3. Atoms in a small world …!
• When we get to the very, very small (seven atoms) We have a lot of new
things that would happen that represent completely new opportunities
for design.
• At the atomic level, we have new kinds of forces and new kinds of
possibilities, new kinds of effects.
• Atoms on a small scale behave like nothing on a large scale, for they
satisfy the laws of quantum mechanics.

4. UNIQUENESS OF THE NANOSCALE
• At nanoscale, the laws of physics operate in an unfamiliar way because
of two important reasons: high surface-to-volume ratio and quantum
effect.
• When the size of building blocks gets smaller, the surface area of the
material increases by six orders of magnitude, while the volume is the
same.
• The properties of the material become strongly dependent on the

5. Nanoscience Scale …!
• Nanoscale studies the phenomena, properties and responses of
materials at atomic and molecular scales, and in general at sizes between
10-100 nm.

less than 100 nm.
