This Surah describes the Night of Power (Laylatul Qadr) in Ramadan when the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. It is one of the odd nights of the last 10 days of Ramadan. Worship on this night is equivalent to over 80 years of worship based on the average human lifespan. While the exact date is not specified, Muslims strive to worship intensely during this time seeking Laylatul Qadr's special blessings. The angels descend on this holy night to carry out Allah's commands, reflecting the grandeur and power of the occasion.
2. Reasons for Revelation
This Surah is 5 simple Ayat that describe how revelation began.
Allah was giving the Prophet (S) knowledge of the Night of Power-
information that he never had before.
We don’t know the exact night, but we know it is one of the last 10 odd
nights of Ramadan.
3. Ayah #1:
“We have sent it down on the night of power/determination”
“WE” “I”
Sometimes Allah uses the pronoun “WE” for Himself, instead
of “I”-This is an illustration of power.
Kings use the plural pronoun for themselves to speak about
themselves with formality. So why wouldn’t Allah use this
pronoun when He isTHE KING of everything!?
Allah uses this pronoun when he talks about
His punishment, His miracles, His creation…
Interestingly, other times Allah uses the
singular pronoun “I” when He’s talking
about Himself as being
merciful, forgiving and close to his slaves
.
VS.
4. Anzalna means that He brought the Quran down all at once.
(Nazzalna means a little at a time)
Kuffar used to ask the Prophet (S) in a sarcastic way:
So, Allah responded to them by saying it came down all at
once on this special night.
Why doesn’t the Quran come
down all at once?
Why bit by bit?
…….
5. One meaning is
DETERMINATION:
On this night Allah tells His
Angels His plan for us for the
entire year.
All the things that will
happen in our lives- who will
be born, who will die, where
you will go, what you will eat..
everything.
The execution of His plan is
shared with the Angels.
Why is it called the
Night of QADR?
- One meaning is
APPRECIATION:
This night is so appreciated by
Allah, that worshipping in it counts
as more than 1,000 months.
That equals over 80 years.
The night is special because the
Earth is flooded with millions
of Angels.
Qadr means power, but
also has other meanings
6. This Ayah is meant to show the grandeur of
the night. Like saying: “You have no idea..”
It’s too great for us to even imagine….
Ayah #2:
“And what could give you a clue what Laylatul Qadr is?”
7. The deeds we do in 1 night will be worth 83 years.
The avg lifetime for women in USA is 80 and for men 74.
So Allah is giving us a bonus opportunity to get deeds in one month, more than what we could gain in our lifespan.
And you get this over and over every year.
The nations that came before us had much longer life spans- like Nuh’;s time they lived for hundreds of years..They had so
many years to collect good deeds.. But we, the Ummah of the Prophet, even though we have shorter life spans, we have the
gift of this night which can help us catch up to those that came before us.
Ayah # 3:
“Laylatul Qadr is better than (not is the same as) 1,000 months”
Arabs used to use the term 10000
months when they wanted to exaggerate.
“I’m gonna be your friend forever” =
“I’m gonna be your friend for 1000
months.” So allah uses the same language
they used to use.
8. Allah told us this night is one of the
last odd nights of Ramadan.
Why didn’t He tell us the exact night?
IF he had told us the exact date and we chose to:
then we would be in big trouble.
After you knew what it was and when it was, you brushed it aside?
It is from Allah’s mercy that he didn’t tell us.
Sin on
that night
Sleep
through
it
Ignore it
9. There are other instances in the Quran where Allah
mentions Angels and Spirit (Ruh) together.
Ruh is the nickname for Angel Jibreel.
He’s the Angel responsible for bringing the books of
Allah to all the Prophets.
On this night, the special Angel Jibreel comes
down… this is the anniversary of the year he first
brought the Quran, so he comes every year.
“The Angels and Sprit (Ruh) come down in it”
Ayah #4:
…
10. Permission means someone is making a request… On this night, the Angels ask permission of Allah to
come down to give salam to the believers who are worshipping on the Earth.
Angels want to meet and honor us- we are the ones who were invited to worship on this special night.
Angels have been given many responsibilities to carry out on earth.
So this Ayah mentions that just like they are given permission to come down on this night, they are given
permission to come down during the entire year to carry out all their duties.
…
…With the permission of their Lord because of all the commands.
Ayah #4 continued:
11. This is important, because in other religions,
sometimes SHIRK (associating partners with Allah)
happens through the Angels.
People give credit to the Angels for the powers they
have and sometimes give them a status equal to God.
It’s true that Angels have the power to move
mountains, to bring down the rain, and to destroy
nations, but that power comes from Allah.
The Angels don’t get the credit.
They just follow Allah’s commands.
12. There are many opinions on what is meant here by PEACE:
* Every decision made for us by Allah is peace
* Every command carried out by Angels is peace
* On this night there should be peace- no evil taking place by anyone
* On this night the Angels are constantly saying “Salam” (peace) to us
* 3 things of peace descend
1.THE QURAN
2.THE ANGELS
3. GREETINGS
Ayah # 5:
“It (the night) is peace, until the beginning of Fajr”
The night ends when Fajr
of the next morning begins.
13. This surah was revealed in
Mecca when most of the
audience were disbelievers.
Muhammad (S) was the one who received the
amazing Quran. Those who chose to accept it,
benefitted. Those that rejected it – too bad for
them. Their loss. They missed out on a
remarkable book .They missed out on more
than 1,0000 months of deeds.
Think About It
During this time, the
prophet was being attacked
and insulted by the enemies
of Islam- some his own
family members.
This Surah is meant to
show the disbelievers
that Allah and the
Prophet were in a
position of power.
Quraysh was not. They should have felt grateful that that
they got to hear the words of Allah -
and unlike us today- they got to hear it
from the mouth of the Prophet
himself!
15. Extra Food forThought:
People try to poke fun of the concept by saying that if day of
judgment started in the USA during day, wouldn’t it be night in
Africa?
Allah says: ON the day of judgment, the Earth will be flattened,
the sun and moon will collapse into each other. That means no
more night and day…
Allah controls it all.
The same concept applies for this night. When it’s Laylatul Qadr
USA, as the sun moves, the night trains behind it.. so the
opportunity of that night travels and moves along the entire earth.
