2. Why talk
about the
north and
south of
England ?
Being from the north, it is part of my
identity. I have lived in Newcastle all my
life and the people I have met seem to
have one issue in common... the south.
The north and south of England have
always been in a divide about which is
better, and which is worse.
My series is aiming to show people how
the north and South, are not so different.
3. It's not just me !
Northern beliefs Southern Beliefs
"the towns were grey and
uninviting"
"working-class, loud, heavy-
drinking and just a bit
uncouth"
"The real question is
what do decent hard-
working Northerners
think of half flat, warm,
shandy supping, skirt
warming Southerners"
"Work-shy and just a
little bit soft."
Some replies to a Quora when asked "What do
Southern English really think about northerners ?
4. What are
the
stereotypes
?
Common stereotypes between
the north and south:
•North of is poor – South is rich
(investment, the people, the
services)
•North are aggressive – South are
ignorant
•North is a dirty area – South is a
clean place
•North think they are neglected –
South think north are poor for a
reason
5. What will
my series
consist of ?
4 families – 2 from north 2 from
south (low and high income)
Episode one - North low will go
to the south low (vice versa)
Episode two - North high will go
to south high (vice versa)
Episode three - North low will go
to south high (vice versa)
6. Length and layout
Introducing the 2 families on the episode and where they are from (5 min)
The two families will travel to the others are while giving initial ideas of what it will be like (5 min)
The two families will meet and go to look at their house (10 min each)
The family's will take their guests and show them around their local area and show them the "good spots" (10
min each)
Feelings after the experience (5 min)
Total - 55 Min
By using families from the area and different incomes, we will see the good and bad parts in each area, showing
how similar we actually are.
7. Budget
Without working in the industry, myself I do not know the costs of production so
cannot give the actual figure; however, I do know what will be needed.
• Travel
• Food
• Camera crew
• Presenter
• 4 family's (cost to bring them onto show)
• Filming permits (some locations)
• Editing crew
• Pre – Production crew ( Shooting locations and knowing how the shoot will go )
8. Presenters
Being born in the north- east and currently living in the
south Ant and Dec bring a 2-sided opinion on the matter.
Due to their young careers in the industry, they will also
be able to change how they present the show in order to
target that slightly younger demographic.
Also, with a well-established career and mainly only
doing game shows, to do a documentary style Tv show, it
would attract their already large fanbase to watch the
show.
9. Similar Products
• LADBIBLE – North Vs South.
LADBIBLE's North Vs South video consists of two people from the north and
south of England agree and disagree over different stereotypes. The video has
over 150k views as well as over 1.5k comments. Therefore, showing that
people are interested in the views of both sides.
Rich Kids go Skint:
Rich kids go from their lavish lifestyle to another household to see what it is
like to be poor. Rated a 6.3 on IMDb and making 37 episodes, I can see that it
was good, but not good enough.
10. Target audience
• Weather it is in college, University or the Pub you will always find a person
who has a serious or jokey opinion on the matter. However, since this is not a
serious matter within the country and mainly a long running joke, I believe
that it would be best suited for the 16 – 34 yrs old demographic
• Due to using rich and poor incomes, I can target both ends of the social
grade as each will be intrigued by not only the other area but also the people
that are different in their area.
• The psychographics of the people I am targeting are people who have an
interest in looking at others and their style of lives as well as being
interested in different parts of the Uk.
• Therefore, I would be targeting the "Explorer" physcographic.
11. Channel:
• Due to the nature and tone of my series I believe that BBC Three is the best
target for my product. There it will fit in with the other content and due to
its short time span, won't take up much space in the calendar.
• Broadcasting will aim to happen between 7pm and 9pm as this will fit
the daily lives of people coming home from college or work.
• It will be broadcasted one episode every week in order to space out the short
series
• If it is a success, the series could continue for:
• North Vs South America
• France Vs Uk etc...
