2. I am employed by Newton County Schools. Newton County Schools does not
currently have a BYOD/BYOT policy plan, so I selected the neighboring county of
Henry County Schools for this assignment.

Why is Henry County asking students to bring their own technology to school?
For many of our students, laptops, smart phones and tablets have become powerful tools for
socializing and entertainment; as educators and adults, we need to provide students the
opportunity to use them as a tool for learning as well.
Learning in the 21st century and becoming college/career ready requires students to move
beyond memorizing basic facts. Students need experiences that will help them become better
problem-solvers, critical and creative thinkers, and contributors to a larger community. Effective
use of technology is a means to this end. Allowing students to use the tools with which they are
most comfortable also helps students learn to become better learners – a skill that will last them a
lifetime.
What type of device is allowed?
Any device that is capable of connecting to the Internet through WiFi is allowed. This includes
laptops, tablets (such as the iPad or Android tablets), iPod Touches, and smart phones (such as
iPhones, Android or Windows Mobile phones).
How do I connect to Henry County's WiFi?
In order to connect to the Internet at school, choose HCPS_Wireless from your available WiFi
networks. Quick steps for connecting can be found on the right.
Where can I use my device?
You may use your smart phones, tablets or laptops at school as long as it does not interfere with
your education or the education of others. Teachers will give guidelines on when it is appropriate
to use your technology tools in their classroom. Common areas, such as hallways, cafeterias and
library media centers will be addressed by individual schools. If you are unsure, ask your teacher
or principal.
Is a technology device a required school supply?
No. If a student does have access to his/her own device, HCPS strongly encourages them to use
it at school for educational purposes.
What options are available for familiesthat cannot afford a technology device?
HCPS is investigating the option of a donation program of gently-used devices from the
community. Stay tuned for more information on the program. In the meantime, teachers may ask
students to work in pairs or groups. In addition, there may be desktops or laptops available for
students to use.
What are a student’s responsibilities when using their own device in school?
Students and families are responsible for the care of their own device. This includes software or
hardware maintenance and keeping the device either with them or in a locked location at all
times. Students should also make sure their device is fully charged each morning. Students are
to use their device in a responsible manner and in accordance with the district’s Acceptable Use

3. Policy.
What if a device is damaged, lost, or stolen?
While students are responsible for protecting their own property, if a device is lost or stolen,
please report it to the principal. If you are interested in purchasing insurance, check your
homeowner's or renter's insurance policy. Many companies cover laptops and other electronics,
but consult your insurance agent for the details. You may have also purchased an insurance plan
when you originally bought the device.

4. Google Chrome
 Henry County Schools and Newton County Schools use Chromebooks so
using Google Chrome Apps makes the most sense.
 Google Chrome is really fast.
 Google Chrome is very simple and easy to use.
 Google Chrome contains add-ons and extensions that provide flexibility to
users.
 Google Chrome Apps run in their own browser.

5. Accomodations
 Each Chromebook cart contains 30 Chromebooks.
 Teachers must reserve Chromebooks 2 days in advance.

6. Grouping
Students will be grouped based on the type of assignment. Groupings will consist of
individual work, partners, and/or groups of 4.
