Males aged 15-24 die at rates far higher than of any other age group.
The rate of death increases if the young male is from a
low income, urban area.
In Jacksonville, the leading cause of death for young males ages
15-24 is homicide followed by unintentional injury - both of
which are directly related to how boys and men are socialized.
For these males, the traditional views that "real men" must be
"fearless," "tough" and "aggressive" have severe and negative
consequences that impact all residents.
The focus of the Boys 2 Men initiative is to improve the outcomes
for these young males by addressing:
racial, social and cultural barriers that impede a healthy
transition from boyhood to manhood
the allure of violence as resource for addressing frustrations
gender-specific issues with school performance and completion
challenges with acquiring gainful employment
issues related to creating and sustaining emotionally
and physically healthy relationships
