UNITED WAY CELEBRATES COMMUNITY SERVICE
United Way of Gratiot County hosted its annual banquet celebrating community service
efforts of local businesses and individuals
The banquet was at the Masonic Home Doig Chapel and Conference Center on April 8
leading up to the announcement of the 2015 campaign totals.
Marc Szymczak, member of the board of directors and Mercantile Bank employee, was
awarded the Carolyn M. Thompson Award for outstanding community service by Harmony
Nowlin of Consumer’s Energy. Szymczak was recognized for his services to United Way and to
the Optimist Club of Gratiot County.

Dr. Brent Moeggenborg served as master of ceremonies and before accepting the
Leadership award for his last day as acting president of the board of directors.
Helping Hands awards issued by partner agencies to Jean Omans-Neal for her work with
the American Red Cross baby pantry, Garth Anderson from Big Brothers Big Sisters and Ruth
Cool from the Salvation Army.
Businesses of the year were Consumer’s Energy, Wolverine Pipeline Co. and Biggby 364
of Alma.
Youth organizations of the year were the Alma College men’s basketball team, Service to
Community group and the St. Louis cheerleading team.
