7. The
Corinthian

COLUMNS AS DECORATION
9. Columns are classified into four types
1. Based on Shape
2. Based on Type of Reinforcement
3. Based on type of Loading
4. Based on Slenderness Ratio
TYPES OF COLUMNS

10. Based on Shape
Rectangular or Square
They are generally used
in the construction of
buildings., which are
common in practice
TYPES OF COLUMNS
11. L- TYPE COLUMN:-
They are generally used in the corners of the
boundary wall and has same features of a
rectangular or square column. These kind of
columns are very less used.
Similarly T-Type Column ,V-Type Column etc

TYPES OF COLUMNS
12. TYPES OF COLUMNS
Based on Slenderness Raito
Short Column and Long Column
• The Strength of Short Column is controlled by strength of
material and geometry of cross-section
• Long Columns are those which have a height and cross-sectional
dimentions more than 1:12. These are weaker than short columns
and are not preferred generally
13. Steel columns
have good compressive strength, but
have a tendency to buckle or bend
under extreme loading
Different Terms about Columns
Slenderness ratio
The slenderness ratio is the effective length of
a column in relation to the least radius of
gyration of its cross-section. If this ratio is not
sufficient then buckling can occur
14. Position of Columns
For Better esthetic effects , Columns should be Hidden In walls
Avoid Providing Columns at Center of Hall
