Working Title: Bank!
I called it this since there is a type of shot in basketball called a ‘bank shot’ when you hit the ball
off the backboard to score. Some people shout ‘Bank!’ When they attempt one of these shots so I
named it after this since it is a term basketball fans will easily recognize so they know it is a
basketball magazine.
Audience:
Who is your audience? Be very detailed; age, gender, social status, psychographic etc. Use the
Audience Classifications PowerPoint on Blackboard to help you develop this section.
Why would your project appeal to this person? Discuss each audience element in relation to
content (why would your product appeal to the age group? Why would your product appeal to the
gender? Etc.)
Age: Teenagers- aged 14 to age 25. I think my magazine would appeal to people of these ages as
basketball is a sport that you usually need to be fairly fit to play and these are ages where people
are usually at their most active. I feel like this magazine would be too mature and would have too
much writing to be interesting to children but may be interesting to teenagers and adults.
A lot of teenagers want to be a good or pro basketball player so they may want to read this
magazine since it may improve them as a player.
Gender: This magazine could appeal to any gender but the target audience is mostly male. It will
appeal more to men as the magazine is mainly about male basketball players such as NBA
players. This could also appeal to female basketball fans that like watching basketball and could
also appeal to female basketball fans as I could include female basketball players as well as male
basketball players.
Social status: skilled working class. The main target audience of the magazine is working class
people. The magazine has an affordable price of £2.50 so it can easily be afforded by working
class people. However I think that this magazine could appeal to any social status really since
basketball is a sport loved by many different people of many different social classes, ethnicities
and backgrounds. Unlike things such as clothes that can only be afforded by people that have
more money.
Sexuality: Any. It is a magazine about basketball so this would just appeal to whoever is interested
in the sport.
Could interest gay men since there are a lot of male basketball players and gay people are
attracted to men.
Uses and gratifications: To learn and find information (e.g facts about basketball players, teams
etc)
Social interaction- Sport is a popular talking point so some of the topics in the magazine may lead
to discussions and conversation.
Rationale (approx. 100 words)
I've gained a lot of knowledge of photoshop since I previously hadn't ever used it. I now know how
to put together an image and I also know how to make an animation too.
I can learn new techniques by watching tutorials from the internet.
This will have an impact on my project since it means I will be able to make my own magazine
cover for my work, which I couldn’t previously do.
My advergame was a sidescroller/endless runner advergame for Irn-Bru so it will have no impact
on my project as it's unrelated to my print based work.

Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
What is the concept for your project and what are you going to make?
What research will you need to conduct and how will it help you make your project/
The concept for my project is a basketball magazine called Bank! It is targeted to 15-24 year olds.
It contains basketball trivia, interviews with players, articles on basketball, tutorials on how to do
moves, a questions page.
I am going to make a magazine cover and a two page spread of an article in the magazine.
I am going to use my friend Taylor (who is on the basketball team) and I will interview him about
the York College basketball season. I am also going to use him for the front cover.
I will need to research things such as what people from my target audience would like to read
about most. I have some friends that fit the description of my target audience so I will ask them
what they would want to read in a basketball magazine. This will help me improve my project since
it will mean that the magazine is what the target audience would genuinely want to read.
I will also need to research magazine covers and double page spreads of magazines so I can see
what real magazines include so I will have a good idea of things to include in my final work.
Evaluation (approx. 50 words)
How do you plan to evaluate the work? Reference conducting on-going evaluation (Production
Reflections) and your final self-reflection (Evaluation), analysing your work and its outcomes.
How will this process help developing your working practices as you continue with your
study/media career?
I plan on evaluating my work through my production reflection in each of my pro-formas.
I’ll also evaluate my work through my evaluation pro forma. In there I’ll talk about this project as a
whole and will say what I am happy with and which things I can improve on.
