This document summarizes a media evaluation project. It discusses the key elements of the magazine design including the masthead, cover lines, imagery, and page layout. It also summarizes the target audience as young adults interested in music genres. Market research was conducted through questionnaires to make the product appealing to this audience. The document also reflects on skills learned in the course like using blogger and photoshop tools, and recognizes areas for improvement from the preliminary task.
5. How does your media product represent particular social groups? Font Styles Body jewellery Clothing
6. The company’s which will distribute my magazine... Future Media Publishing As it publishes magazines which are similar to the product I have designed. Examples being: Metal Hammer, Classic Rock magazine and Guitar World. These Magazines attract a similar target audience.
7. My media products audience would be... Young adults (16 -29) Young adults such as teenagers would be attracted to my magazine as they would like the genre of music.
8. Attracting/addressing the audience. I designed and handed out a questionnaire. Then I collated the results I got back, I then used this information to make my product more eye catching and more useful. I also used cover lines of which the audience would find appealing and were specifically targeted at there age group.
9. Things I have learnt on this course.. I have learnt of the site Blogger and have learnt how to uploaded my work onto it as a blog. Also I have learnt many things on Photoshop E.g. Blending options, the eyedropper tool and the polygonal lasso tool.
10. Looking back at my preliminary task I feel... My preliminary task: Lacks colour scheme Imagery hasn't been edited has basic text designs
Masthead - Gives indication of the genre of music and is often re-occurringCover lines – give insight to the genre of music shown within the magazineBanner – gives a brief list of bands featuredMain cover line – Tells of the main article withinPull quotes – a small segment from a featured articleImagery – shows those featured, often conforming to stereotypes related to the genres of music.
Imagery – separate stories from within the magazineHeader – shows this is the contents pageInformation – a brief segment of information on previous issues. Reoccurs within each issue providing familiralityColumns of contents - Pages of interest are displayed here
Page header – gives the reader an brief idea of what/whom the page is featuringPull quote – a snippet of information from within the text of the page, it also draws the readers attentionImagery – the imagery features the same subject in various scenarios in relation to the textColumns of text – this is the main text it is not to long but provides a substantual amount of information on the subject
Body jewellery - This is another attribute of which the social groups are stereotyped as being associated with Clothing - The clothing within the magazine is that which is often stereotyped as being in relation to the genre of music.Font styles - The font styles that have been used would be found attractive by the social groups as it is similar to existing media product they would be associated with. E.g. Terrorizer magazine
This company would distribute my magazine as it already has several magazines of the same genre this shows the company has experience with similar products.
Teenagers or young adults would be interested in this magazine as they may want to move away from main stream music. They would find it appealing if they interested in the music/bands featured. They also may have friends/family which listen to this genre of music. They possibly would like to know about the bands they listen to and learn of latest album releases or tour dates. They may also play instruments themselves so they take more interest in the music with music similar to that they play
The blending options – I used this tool on my masthead and on imagery, the main effect I used from the blending options was the stroke tool. I used this on my mast heads to make Bolden it, as well as on images to give it the effect of a Polaroid image. The eyedropper tool – I used this tool to help maintain the same colour scheme throughout the product. This was useful as the colour scheme was a main part of my product design. The polygonal lasso tool – this tool was used to cut down images and take sections from an image e.g. removing backgrounds. This was useful as it gave me the opportunity to play around with images and remove anything in the background which wouldn’t have fit with the magazine.
Looking back on the preliminary task, I feel that I have learnt a great amount as going into the ancillary project I hadn’t used Photoshop before, meaning I had very little knowledge of even the basic’s. However since then I have gained a vast knowledge on the subject, I am able recognise when magazines have used the Guttenberg design or the rule of thirds.I am also able identify and name what magazines have used to make there product more desirable one example being the use of cover lines and pull quotes and use these same design ideas within my own product. I have learnt how to recognise how media products cater to their target audiences needs and how the audiences are devised by social groups. As well as identifying my own products target audience, social groups and how I can use different methods to attract them to my own magazine.
As I became more capable of using Photoshop I was able to add detail to my magazine, changing the background from a single colour. Also by adding a title which have been edited to my magazine gives the magazine a more recognisable appearance
