What is a hydrogen generator
1. What is a hydrogen generator?
A hydrogen generator is basically a device that is used for the separation of hydrogen from
oxygen in water. As we know that water or in scientific terms known as H2O, is formed by the
two elements; hydrogen and water. Thus, a generator is used to separate the hydrogen from
H2O so that it can be used in various applications. Various uses mainly include the commercial
use, as hydrogen is most commonly released by a petroleum cracking process from natural gas.
The generation of hydrogen in large amounts, from water is a way more expensive process than
generating it from carbon. However, for domestic use, the small generator is the easiest and
most effective means of separation.
These generators are basically used in huge hydrogen plant that uses the method of generating
hydrogen through the technique Electrolysis, which is bipolar type and is mainly done along
with gas boosters and de-oxo units. The process of Electrolysis mainly dissociates the elements
of oxygen and hydrogen by charging the water with an electrical current. The approximate
amount of power consumed by these plants is 4.5 KW which is per cubic meter of hydrogen.
Further, the hydrogen obtained is collected in a hydrogen gas holder which is further used for
processing. Though hydrogen obtained through electrolysis is 99.8% pure, the use of de-oxo
units helps in purifying it further which is up to 99.999%.
