3. INTRODUCTION
A good library makes an immeasurable contribution to
an educational program, & that teacher serves her
students best, who early in course, introduce them to
its use.
It not only opens the door to new knowledge but
stimulates critical thinking & helps to develop
independence in seeking & obtaining information.

4. ACCOMODATION & EQUIPMENT
The college library should be conveniently located in
as far as possible quiet, attractive surroundings. The
size will depend upon the number of persons for
whom it caters, but it should be large enough to
permit the proper arrangements of books & to seat
approximately half the larger number of students
usually admitted to a class. Adequate ventilation &
good lightening, both natural & artificial are necessary.

5. The furniture & equipment should include the following:
Comfortable chairs, the tables should be convenient height.
Metal book shelves or cupboards with glass doors.
Boxes for pamphlets.
Catalogues cabinets.
Bulletin board.
Book display rack.
Steel book supports.
Magazine display rack, preferably with space for back
numbers.
Transparent magazine cover.
Computer & other modern equipment.

6. ORGANISATION OF LIBRARY
To obtain the maximum benefits from the library
facilities, four conditions are necessary:
1. There should be one person responsible for it.
2. There should be a committee to advise on its use.
3. There should be policy to regulate its use.
4. There should be a budget.

7. (1) Librarian –
The management of library require special knowledge &
skilled full librarian. Where no such provision is made, it is
possible to operate a small library quite effectively when an
interested staff members accepts the responsibilities.
The function of librarian are as follows:
1. Maintaining an up-to-date record for all the library
holding- the number of books, journal etc.
2. Maintaining the accession register.
3. Classifying & cataloguing all the books.

9. (2) Library committee
The membership of library committee should include
librarian of staff member officiating as secretary, & a
nursing teacher , a student & may other interested member
of staff.
The function of librarian committee are:
Preparing the initial budget estimate, & reviewing them
periodically.
Selection of new books
Selection of magazines for subscriptions
Formulating policies regarding the use of library

Encourage the use of library
Determining & reporting on library requirements
Assigning the responsibility for reviewing new
publications, etc.
The selection of books for purchase is generally done in
consultation with or on the recommendation of the school
staff. The library committee should also make itself
responsible for arranging for translation of extracts, where
there is need.

11. (3) Policies
Certain policies will have to formulated so that the library
may operate efficient & in manner convenient to the
majority of those using the facilities. Some of the matter
concerning which it is an advantage to have a stated policy
are as follows:
The hours at which library will be open .
The person who may use the library facilities
The kinds of books & journal which will be stocked
The books which may borrowed & those which must be
read in library

13. (4) Budget
When setting up a new library or recognizing an old
one, a nonrecurring budget will be required for
furniture & equipment and for the purchase of some
well selected books to serve as a nucleus around which
the library will be built. The budget require depend the
needs of the school. The minimal initial outlay of Rs.
50,000/- would help to start a library for a small
college, with an annual reoccurring budget of at least
Rs. 100,000/- for five year until the library is
established.

14. The item on which the annual budget should be
estimated would include the following:
The purchase of new books, pamphlets, reprints, etc.
Subscription to journal
Binding of volume of journals at the end of each year
Stationary items, postage etc.
The budget may also provide for the payment of the
part time service of a qualified librarian to assist in
establishing & maintaining the library & could
include provision for any translation of library
material which require to be carried out by person
outside the institution.

15. (5) Library holdings
The number & variety of books & other material in the
library will be determined by objectives of program &
by the ends of program and by the needs of students.
The library may stock a few or all of the following
variety of publications:
Dictionaries e.g. english, hindi, & local regional
language, nursing, medical etc.
Bibliography of nursing publications & extracts
Central, state & municipal government reports &
documents such as five-year, plan statistical data

18. OTHER PHYSICAL FACILITIES
Housekeeping room – in the college building there should be
room for the use of housekeeping staff. The room should
contain following:
A sink with running water
Shelves for storage of cleaning equipment
A table & chairs
Cupboards for personal belongings
Facility for resting for non resident staff
Storeroom
