Incessant rainfall accompanied by hailstorm has severely affected tea
bushes in Assam, India's largest tea producer, and planters are worried that
this will affect production of premium variety second flush tea.Second
flush tea accounts for 20% of the total tea production, and commands a
premium in the domestic and international markets. In upper Assam, some
tea estates were flooded following the heavy rains. Assam has already
recorded 125% of its normal rainfall, 25% above normal, during the current
pre-monsoon period."Several tea growing areas have reported flooding in
tea estates. Tea leafs were severely affected by the hailstorm which
occurred on several days.There was continuous downpour for two to three
weeks in April this year," secretary of Tea Association of India, Guwahati,
Dipanjal Deka, told a leading newspaper. The second flush production is
from May end to July."The production of second flush tea will definitely
get affected this year," said Deka.All Assam Small Tea Growers'
Association (AASTGA) vice president Karuna Mahanta said, "At present,
green leaf production is low. Even prices of green leaf are on the lower
side." India's production in the year 2014 was 1207.31 million kgs, of
which Assam's production was 610.97 million kgs. In 2015, India
accounted for 1191m kgs of tea production, and Assam roughly produced
614.57m kgs.Erratic weather conditions in the major tea producing regions
of Darjeeling, Dooars and Assam is likely to pull down tea production this
year by 5-10%, industry executives said.Darjeeling and parts of Dooars are
witnessing a dry spell. On the other hand, tea gardens in Assam are facing
incessant rains, which may bring down tea production in Apr by at least
10% from a year ago. "Darjeeling gardens are the worst hit. There is no
rain in the area that produces the finest of Indian teas," said AN Singh,
managing director, Goodricke Group."Ideally, by this time the gardens
should have received 10 inches of rainfall. The gardens had received some
2 inches of sporadic rainfall in March which was not enough."
Chana on NCDEX settled down amid profit booking due to
government's measures to check surging prices. With prices of pulses
spiralling again on supply crunch, the centre has asked the states to
impose stock holding limits for traders on all varieties of pulses in order
to curb hoarding.Import of pulses rose 26 per cent to 5.79 million
tonnes (mt) last financial year to meet rising domestic demand,
Parliament was informed. India had imported 4.58 mt during 2014-15.
"There has been a gap between the demand and supply of pulses in the
country during the last year and the current year as the domestic
demand for pulses is higher than the domestic production," Food
Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said. The production of pulses is estimated
to have risen to 17.33 MT in 2015-16, as against 17.15 MT in the
previous year.According to data, the gap between demand and supply
was 0.8 MT in 2015-16. The demand was estimated at 23.66 MT as
against the total availability of 22.86 MT. To control the spike in prices
of pulses, the Centre has decided to release 10,000 tonnes of the staple,
mainly tur and urad, from the buffer stock to ensure its availability at
reasonable prices.
Ref Soya oil settled flat due to weak trend at domestic spot markets
on muted demand. Moreover, there is an anticipation of steady demand
from stockists. India's soyoil imports surged 68.44% to 321,975 tons in
March compared to 191,150 tons for the same period a year ago, data
release from the Solvent Extractors Association (SEA) of India
showed. Soybean oilmeal exports plunged 99.06% to 430 tons in
March compared to 45,917 tons for the corresponding period a year
earlier, data released from Solvent Extractors Association of India
(SEA) showed.India freight on board (FOB) soymeal price was at $480
per ton in March compared to $448 per ton for the same period year
ago. US soymeal prices traded at $384.24 per ton as of Apr 20. As per
the latest report from United States Department of Agriculture
(USDA), the global oilseed production for 2015/16 is projected at
526.9 million tons, down fractionally from last month.

CASTORSEED PRICES AT KEY SPOT
MARKET
National Market Update
All India average price for castor seed decreased by 7.20 % from Rs 3558.35
to Rs 3301.88 per qtl during the week ended on 30th April-2016. However, it
is higher by 9.44% from the price registered during the second week of April.
When we compare average price of seed from April-2015, it rules lower by
5.35 % from current average price (Rs3301.88 per qtl.). Decrease in demand
for seed at higher level restricted firm tone during the week under review.
However, more dip is unlikely as pace for seed arrivals in markets has
declined.
India exported 16542.23 MT castor oil during week ended 24th April-2016
at an average price of $1095.69 per MT. It is lower by 43.05% from previous
week. However, price realization has increased by 2.59% from last week. The
maximum and minimum prices were registered at $1746.66 and 908.36 per
MT. Castor oil export would continue to stay steady as prices are lower than
normal expectation and availability is higher. Major importers like China
followed by USA and Netherlands are stocking oil taking advantage of lower
price.
In Patan market, castor seed prices are likely to trade down in near term.
Stock of castor seed is likely to increase by 20,000 bags compared to
corresponding period of last year. Last year castor seed stock was around 4
lakh bags.
