2. Mind Maps/Brainstorms
Star by using the first few slides to create mind
maps and or brainstorms for ideas related to
your project. Get as many possibilities as you
can.
Don’t worry about practicality, suitability or
potential at this stage. You will assess the ideas
later.
3. Mind Maps/Brainstorms
• My first idea is to create a poster to show the highlights of the new environmental act. I want the design
of the poster to be very simple but effective. I want there to be a drawn image of wildlife such as a hare,
badger or fox with a cross over the top to show that we are destructing them and their homes. There
would be a catchy slogan so that the audience can remember the poster and it leaves an impact. The
animals featured on the posters could be famous cartoon animals such as Bambi so that it interests a
wider audience and also makes the audience feel upset about the destruction because the character is
familiar. This means that I could create a sequel of posters with different movie characters on them so
that the target audience is wider and leaves more of an impact on people as it could portray their
favourite film etc. The colour scheme would be very simple with just red and green as they are
contrasting colours. The font would be black or white to keep the poster looking simple and
professional. I don’t want there to be too much colour on the poster as it would then appear happy and
targeted at a younger audience. There would be a small section of text underneath the image of the
animal explaining what the new environmental act would entail, however I do not want the poster to be
filled with information because I want it to be very simple but effective. I want the poster to act as a
campaign poster to fight against the destruction of different areas in North Yorkshire. It will protest
against different viewpoints against the subject.
7. Mind Maps/Brainstorms
• My second idea is to create a leaflet full of information about the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and the new
environmental act. The leaflet would discuss what the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is with examples of
different areas near by. Inside the leaflet, I would also talk about the new act and what it would entail
and achieve. This idea is much more about detail and information rather than my idea 1. The leaflet
would be green with brown font because these colours connotate to nature the most. I would include
my own photography at different locations to promote them as well as areas that are not currently
protected but need to be! The leaflets would be posted so that they would reach a wider audience as
well as photographs shared on social media with a hash tag. I want the mast head to be bold, however
not as large as on idea 1. It will be more about The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and what they want to
achieve. However, I do not want the leaflet to be filled with information because this means that the
audience will not want to read all of it and it will be very uninteresting. Instead, I will create a front
cover that it more about the graphics and design and inside will be all the necessary information. The
leaflets are designed to interest an older audience because they are more informative and less
colourful. However, it will also interest a younger audience because photographs can be shared on social
media and the audience can share what wildlife means to them with the hash tag.
11. Mind Maps/Brainstorms
• For my final idea, I would like to create various different products for the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. I would
like to create campaign posters because they are the most effective and reach a much larger audience. I
want to keep the poster very simple and basic because I think that it makes the campaign more
memorable and influences the audience to feel upset and what is happening to North Yorkshire. I would
like there be a family of hedgehogs in the centre of the poster. Surrounding the hedgehogs will be a
building site for houses etc. To make the poster look cuter and make the audience feel more upset about
the changes, the hedgehogs will be carrying their belongings in suitcases. Once again, I want the title to
be very short and snappy with a slogan underneath that connects with the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and
the wildlife themselves. Alongside I want to produce a leaflet that is not as informative as idea 2. There
will be appropriate information about the trust included, however there will be much more photographs
and doodles of wildlife in the background. On the leaflet and the portfolio I would like to focus on
specific location for both products because I think it does not make the campaign as general as the
campaign poster. It will perhaps interest more people as they may regularly visit these different
locations. I could also produce a portfolio dedicated to the question: what does wildlife mean to me? I
would include my own photographs and what discuss how wildlife is crucial to my work. I think that all
these products would work nicely because they interest different audience types into signing the
petition to save our wildlife in north Yorkshire. People will want to share their own photographs and
spread what wildlife means to them with hash tags. This will influence the council to see the positive
response about our wildlife and they effect it has on so many people in different ways.
15. Idea Evaluation
Which of your ideas do you want to develop further? Explain why you think that is
the right idea to take forward.
I would like to further develop my idea of creating a leaflet because I think this will allow me to
showcase my photography and create some digital graphics as well as providing information
about the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and the new environmental act. On the front cover of the
leaflet, I would like to feature one wildlife portrait because I think it will grab your attention and
highlight what the leaflet is all about. I want the leaflet to follow a colour scheme of yellow, green
and brown. I think this will make the leaflet eye catching and stand out amongst the rest of the
nature themed leaflets. I think this is the right idea to take forward because it will challenge me
to try new editing techniques for my photography and it will also influence me to create digital
doodles which will make the leaflet more fun and interesting. Producing a leaflet will also help
me improve my own photography as the goal is to capture wildlife in their natural habitat. Finally,
I think this is the right idea to take forward because the theme of this task is what does wildlife
mean to me; I enjoy wildlife photography which means that this task helps me improve my own
skills and knowledge of photography as well as helping protect the environment. People can get
involved in the campaign by sharing their own wildlife photographs using a hash tag and signing
the petition to help protect north Yorkshire wildlife.
16. Development
• Development should include mood boards or other visual
examples of work. It could include basic mock ups of your
vision for the project using the work of others.
• These don’t need to be the same quality as your finished
pieces but they a good indicator of where your project is
going.
• As this is not final work, it may include work from others.
• You could include test work or practice work here too to
further develop your skills.
20. Developed Idea 1
When looking at existing products that follow the same technique, they tend to have some
similarities and differences. For example, all the campaign posters follow a colour scheme of
green, brown and yellow. Green and brown are very earth tones that have connotations to nature
and wildlife which works perfectly for my campaign poster that is all about the Yorkshire wildlife
trust. Yellow is a bright colour that grabs your attention and has connotations to happiness. I
would like to incorporate these colours into my product because I think that it highlights to the
reader what the product is all about. Another similarity between the products is the short tag
line. In the centre or at the top of the page there is a title that addresses the current situation
with our environment. The titles are short to leave an impact on the reader and make them feel
guilty and in need for a change. I would like to follow this technique for my own product because
I think that it grabs your attention and influences the reader to make a change. The final similarity
between the posters is that they all feature digital graphics. All graphics on the poster have been
created on Photoshop: I would like to copy this technique as well as including my own
photography. Mainly, I would like my product to revolve around the photographs, however to
make the product more fun and interesting I will include some small doodles that I would have
created digitally or hand drawn and scanned into Photoshop.
24. Developed Idea 2
My second idea was to create a leaflet full of information about the new environmental act as
well as current nature reserves protected by the Yorkshire wildlife trust. Whilst I was looking for
examples of YWT current leaflets, I noticed lots of different techniques that they use on their
leaflets to make the visually pleasing and full of information that is presented correctly. For
example, the YWT keep the same colour scheme across their leaflets so that the audience knows
that they are produced by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. The colour scheme is green, brown and
blue which are earth tones and have connotations to nature. YWT also includes their own
photography of the different reserves which makes the leaflet stand out and grab your attention.
There is also digital graphics within the leaflet which makes the leaflet look more interesting as it
is full of information and lots of text. I like this technique because it makes the audience read the
information as it looks more appealing and fun. Mainly, I would like to include my own
photographs because this is what I am most passionate about. It will allow me to learn new
techniques and skills to improve my own photography and editing. They also use the same font
type across all leaflets so that they are all connected to the YWT.
28. Developed Idea 3
I looked at examples that have produced work similar to what I would like to create for the
Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. The first page is dedicated to different leaflets that I like the layout of. I
like the look of these examples because they feature several photographs and few doodles in the
background. The photographs take up lots of space on the pages which means that they grab
your attention. There is not much information included on each page which makes the page look
more appealing to read as it does not look boring and uninteresting. When looking at examples of
different campaign posters, there were several similarities and differences. They tend to keep the
main focus on the wildlife as they take up the entire page or half. There is a short slogan so that
the poster stands out and influences the audience to want a change to happen. One difference
between the posters is the colour schemes used. One of the posters has a simple black and white
colour scheme to keep it basic and simple to the point. However, another poster has bright red
font to grab your attention and signify danger. I like how these campaign posters look because
they are very simple but effective. They are not filling the page with information or
images/doodles; there is one simple message that is addressed well. I would like to develop this
idea further into production because I think that these products work really well and will interest
my target audience.
29. Assessment of final ideas
Suitability for audience:. Do you think your audience will engage with your ideas?
I think that the audience will engage with my ideas because they are advertised with print products as well as
shared online. The older audience of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust can engage with the campaign posters and pick
up a leaflet to read where they can gain an understanding of the new environmental act and the trust itself. A
younger audience can interact with the campaign by sharing their own photographs addressing what wildlife
means to them on social media using a hash tag. This will then lead to the public following the Yorkshire Wildlife
Trust on Facebook and Instagram as well as visiting the different protected areas.
Suitability for client: Does your idea fulfil the brief your client gave you?
The brief that I was given by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust was to create my own product that discusses what
wildlife means to me. It needs to advertise the new act to influence the audience to sign a petition to help protect
our environment in north Yorkshire. I think my idea fulfills the brief because I am going to create a leaflet that
includes my own photographs of different wildlife and information about the trust and how successful it is at
protecting north Yorkshire and what it could change in the future.
Timescales: Is your project practical and manageable in the time you have?
My project is definitely practical in the time frame that we have because I am going to create a leaflet and
perhaps a poster within the 4 weeks. In my spare time, I will take photographs so that my time at college is used
correctly to edit my pictures and build the leaflet.
30. Production Schedule:
You should prepare a production schedule that will allow you to manage your time over
the 4 weeks of production. This should include:
• Deadlines: Interim deadlines help you keep on track, final deadlines are final.
• Availability: The availability of the client and any other people you may need to help
you with your project. You will need to contact them. You might to do visit. You may
need to liaise with models, or photographers.
• Feedback: This is a working brief with a real client. You will need to get feedback on
your work and also allow yourself time to make appropriate changes. Plan appropriate
time in to you schedule so that you can do this.
• Resources: You should include a list of resources that you will need to complete your
project. Remember that this all needs to be your own work
32. Schedule
Week 1:
• During week 1, I am going to begin creating my leaflet. I am going to begin designing the front
cover surrounding the image that will be incorporated later on. I am also going to begin writing
drafts of the information that I will include inside the leaflet which will require some research.
Finally, I am going to plan what type of photographs I would like to take and where they will be
taken.
Week 2:
• At the beginning of the week, I am going to complete the design on my front cover ,(without the
image). I will then move onto page 2 where I will begin writing my information and designing the
page. I will take pictures one day during the week ready for editing on week 3. Whilst I am taking
photographs, I will get quotes from workers at the trust and visitors to help build my information.
Week 3:
• During week 3, I will edit my photographs and begin choosing where to put them throughout my
leaflet. I will watch different YouTube tutorials so that I can learn new techniques of how to edit
my photographs.
Week 4:
• In week 4, I will have finished page 2 and editing all my photographs. The front cover will be
complete and all I will need to do is finish page 3 which is also full of information and photos. I will
change any part of my leaflet that needs improving so that it can look the best of my ability.
