2. YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE TRUST BRIEF
• Yorkshire Wildlife trust is campaigning to get an improved environment act, which will not
just protect our current wild spaces, but also actively create new ones to increase our
wildlife numbers and create more space for wildlife.
• As part of their campaign, they want to get people to contact their MP, to ask them to
work towards the strongest possible environmental laws, which will work for wildlife.
• They also want to see what wildlife means to people and their experiences, or lack of
experiences with it.
• They want to encourage people to send their own written or video messages to their MP.
Not everyone knows who their MP is or how to contact them so this might also form part
of the project. They are keen to engage with people of all ages and backgrounds so
finding a range of people to talk to and film would be good. We would also be able to
meet people from the Wildlife Trust at Askham Bog, which is just down the road from
college.
• The brief can be interpreted using video, animation or print, depending on your
preference.
• The work should be suitable for social media. It should be a starting point, which will
hopefully encourage others to take action. If your work is chosen, it will reach a wide
audience via Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. It may also be used by the wider Wild Trusts
organisation.
• We want engaging work they will get people talking about wildlife and encourage them to
be more engaged with the campaign to protect and enhance our wild places.
3. MIND MAP IDEA 1
My first idea is to create a magazine for little kids about the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. This would
consist of a fun magazine for kids aged 6-14 who like to be outside in the fresh air. It will have
puzzles, a treasure hunt around the grounds of the nature reserve, it would also include several fact
file throughout the book on the different seasons of the year and what wildlife you would see. I
have come up with a plan of having a magazine for different nature reserves. This might not be
possible in my production but if I could create different content for a magazine at a different nature
reserve in my production it would give the idea to Yorkshire Wildlife Trust what I am wanting to
achieve. This gender neutral idea would have natural colours with a natural professional font.
When thinking of ideas I thought about what I would want to see at a nature reserve and what
would interest me. It would be something different for Yorkshire Wildlife Trust which might end up
being popular. This would be available at all Yorkshire Wildlife Trust sites and it would be free, you
wouldn't need to be a member to get this product but after seeing this magazine it might appeal to
you to become a member. There will be a few pages at the back of the book on how you can help
the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust this is when I will use the brief which I was given and add a few pages
about how your MP can work- this will also tell you how you can find out who your MP is and how
you can contact them. The font would be much larger than normal it would be a 24pt font as it will
be easier for children to read. The writing style would be very basic and non informative as it is a
magazine for children. Looking at different kids magazines I have noticed that they are seem to have
funky shapes on them- this would attract the younger audience, this might be something which I
would look into for my front cover. Another thing which I noticed is most of the kids magazines
feature a cartoon on the front, this is also something which I would look into.
4. MIND MAP IDEA 2
My second idea is for a photography brochure. This will have a minimum of 20 pages of
wildlife photography with a fact file of the wildlife beside it. It will be on an A5 landscape
orientation with bright vibrant colours. The colour theme will consist of blues, greens and
browns. A photography brochure is something which I've always fancied creating as I would
like to improve my skills in the photography topic. This would be something completely
new to me as my comfort zone normally consists of creating articles and magazines. The
convenient thing about where college is based is the fact that there is a nature reserve just
down the road. I can go here for a few days and take loads of photos, this would be very
effective because every day you might see things changing. My target audience would be
set at a retired person who enjoys going on walks and enjoys nature. There would be barely
any writing involved in this photography book but at the end of the book there will be a
short article on how to help the wildlife- this would be focused on the older generation so I
write how to contact your MP and how to find them- most of the older generation don’t
have computers or don’t know how to use them so I would explain how to find their MP.
5. MIND MAPS IDEA 3
My final idea consists of many different ideas put together in a 4 week production. I
would start with creating more merchandise for the client. As its getting to Christmas
time, I would create some great ideas for little Christmas gifts which could be bought.
This would be one of the first products which I would make. I would also plan social
media posts for the Yorkshire Wildlife's Trust. This would include some of my own
images which will be posted on Instagram and other popular sites. This would appeal to
a younger audience which will get engaged from Facebook, Instagram and twitter. It will
also be good for young families as they can see what events would be coming up. I
would want to create a leaflet which tells the walkers about the history of YWT. It would
also include a fact file of the nature reserve where the leaflets are located. This will bring
a different type of Target audience to this idea- most of the young generation will have
some sort of social media or the internet so they could read more about the YWT but
the older generation are less likely to own a computer or have access to the internet so
the leaflet would appeal more to them. The last section of this idea will be a few
infographic posters, infographic posters are very informative and a great way of teaching
people without it being boring. I will include some bright colours in this to really attract
the target audience attention. This idea would be very exciting to do as it brings lots of
ideas together and it also keeps me very busy throughout the production schedule.
6. IDEA EVALUATION
I would really want to create my first idea. I
felt as though it would be a good product for
the YWT as it would be located at all of the
nature reserves and it gets the younger
generation involved with nature. This is
something which is crucial as soon the nature
lovers aren’t going to around for much longer
hence why the YWT needs to interest the
younger generation. This magazine is
different to all the other projects which I have
ever made, initially I was quite unsure about
how I was going to make this project
interesting for a younger audience but after
going through my plans thoroughly I'm
starting to feel more confident creating
something like this.
7. DEVELOPED IDEA 1
These are the types of colours
which I am wanting to use, I want
to get the naturalistic look for my
fanzine. I think this would attract
all the younger generation nature
lovers.
8. DEVELOPED IDEA 1
These are my favourite font choices
which I have created. I like the three
fonts above. I don't want to make
anything too childish for my magazine
as that would feel very patriotic- I want
to have something which would make
them feel older and grown up.
35. DEVELOPED IDEA 2
I want to make sure I have the best idea which I can think off. This is why
I want to develop two ideas both with a magazine/ fanzine layout but
with separate audiences. The contents would be the same but it would
be more intellectual for an older audience (Karen's Profile age). I
wouldn't include the quizzes and competitions like I have done for the
younger audience but I would include adverts throughout the magazine,
these would be advertising cruises and cameras/ lenses. ’Ever thought of
volunteering’ page- interviewing someone who does volunteer. When
coming to the end of the year magazine I could include a ‘Make 2018
the year you…’. A guided tour of Askham Bog and maybe a top 10
challenging walks in Yorkshire. I think the only issue which I might
experience is trying to get photography- wildlife photography takes
time to do- this is something which I don’t have. If I do choose to do this
idea I will have to think of cunning ways to get past this problem. The
colour theme would be the exact same as the younger audience colour
theme but the typography would be more mature.
45. ASSESSMENT OF FINAL IDEAS
Do you think your audience will engage with your ideas?
I think both of my developed ideas will engaged with the audience. My first idea will
be aimed at younger kids- this is why it has bright colour themes, child like fonts
and illustrations which the audience can identify with the animals in the nature
reserve. The second idea will provide the older audience with more information
about the nature reserve. This would be in a formal style with professional fonts.
Does your idea fulfil the brief your client gave you?
The brief which I received was to create something which would promote a new
environmental law. This is something which an MP can help with. I have adapted my
ideas to have a few pages on promoting this new law and how you can contact your
MP because most people don’t know who their MP is. This is why the pages in my
magazine would be very important because even though it might be for kids, they
might go and tell their parents and ask what it is about.
Is your project practical and manageable in the time you have?
With the time that I have set aside to complete my production (max 4 weeks) I am
sure I will have plenty of time to complete. This will include regular feedback from
my client. If I have spare time I would like to create another fanzine with a different
nature reserve.
