This document discusses different narrative theories. It defines narrative as a story and lists different types of literature considered narratives. It explains Tzvetan Todorov's theory that narratives follow a three-part structure of equilibrium, disruption of equilibrium, and resolution/restored equilibrium. Vladimir Prop's narrative theory identifies 7 common character types in tales. Roland Barthes identified 5 codes that make up narrative: hermeneutic, proairetic, semantic, symbolic, and cultural. Examples of Daredevil and Jessica Jones are given that demonstrate Prop's and Todorov's theories.
2. What is narrative and different types of
narrative
• Definition of Narrative Technique. Narratives are works that provide an account of
connected events. To put it simply, a narrative is a story. There are many types of
literature that are considered narratives, including novels, dramas, fables, folk
tales, short stories, and poetry.
3. Todorov narrative theory
• Tzvetan Todorov's narrative theory suggests that all narratives follow a three
part structure where they begin with equilibrium, where everything is balanced,
progress as something comes along to disrupt that equilibrium, and finally reach a
resolution, when equilibrium is restored
4. Props narrative theory
• Props narrative theory was created by Vladimir prop and he believed that there was 7 characters in
tales.
• The villain, who struggles with the hero (formally known as the antagonist)
• The donor,
• The helper,
• The Princess, a sought-for person (and/or her father), who exists as a goal and often recognizes and
marries hero and/or punishes villain
• The dispatcher,
• The hero, who departs on a search (seeker-hero), reacts to the donor and weds
• The false hero (or antihero or usurper), who claims to be the hero, often seeking and reacting like a
real hero (i.e. by trying to marry the princess)
5. Bartes theory
• Bartes believed that narrative had 5 different codes
• The Hermeneutic Code (HER)
• The Enigma/ Proairetic Code (ACT)
• The Semantic Code (SEM)
• The Symbolic Code (SYM)
• The Cultural Code (REF)
6. TV series and movies that use narrative theory's
• In Daredevil there are props narrative like
• The Hero matt Murdock
• The donor stick
• The helper Sgt Brett Mahoney
• The princess, goal. Clean up the hells kitchen of criminals
• The dispatcher Jack Murdock
• False hero Wilson Fisk
• The villain Wilson Fisk
7. TV series and movies that use narrative theory's
• In Jessica Jones there is Todorov narrative theory
• Jessica Jones has been rebuilding her personal life and career as a hot-tempered
• The villain killgrave come to hells kitchen to find the her Jessica jones and
abducted her with his mind control.
• She finds killgrave and kills him so he can’t use his mind control on people and life
is normal again.
