2. Film4
My product is suited to film4 institution because of there previous successes in distribution and production especially
with their film ‘Inbetweeners’ which is of the same genre of my film and has similar demographics and
psychographics. My film product has a modern theme and young characters which fits into films 4 target audience
plus the films are free of charge gathering a greater audience. My product has young conventions and will suit
perfectly with the channel because of the previous releases film4 have. I will be using conventional settings and
costumes to link with the young audience. Overall my product will link with film4 perfectly due to its modern theme
and setting. Film4 also has a connection with E4 which is known for its more niche youth audience with 92% of its
audience being aged 18-24.
3. Conventions of Genre
Through my genre research I have discovered different conventions for comedy plus I have done numerous
audience research questionnaires to discover my target audience. The main conventions of genre I have
discovered are conventions such as settings which are stereotypically average settings like pubs, houses, nightclubs
and beaches. Overall the setting and mice-en-scene are fairly formal with costume sticking to everyday clothes
like t-shirts and jeans for example. These are some specific conventions that we will utilize in our film so our
characters will have modern trends and appeal to the target audience. Our props will be fairly conventional using
everyday items such as a mobile phone or car. Through research of trailers we found these were most consistent
throughout the comedy genre with props being fairly mundane unlike an action film for example which has a
variety of extreme props.
4. Audience research
I completed various audience research tasks which I found out different demographics and peoples
psychographics. In terms of demographic I found out that a majority of my audience was male around 66%
potentially because of me aiming towards a masculine and laddish themed films. Most of the audience had
similar psychographic interest such as sports and social media and of course interest in watching films. This is
encouraging that my audience has a general interest in film as my audience will connect with the trailer more
and it will make the conventions more useful. Through audience research I also discovered their opinions on
trailers and features they expect to see. This information allowed me to craft some more production ideas and
shows me how to create a successful film and trailer. I discovered that the mainly male audience preferred sexual
references and more action scenes in the comedy trailers. Around 66% of my audience is male which I discovered
through using questionnaires like survey monkey and padlets.
5. Production Work
I have created various production concepts and ideas that will challenge conventions of form and genre. The
main storyline is built around a competition called ‘the craziest night’ which is a challenge sent out for a group to
record the craziest night ever that must be authentic and not In a country of their own. 4 teenage characters
travel abroad to begin this challenge and they trailer will be keeping to conventions by having 4 stereotypical
male characters also with a fool character in the group. The film will stick to a teenage and masculine theme like
the film inbetweeners and will be aimed at a younger niche audience. Overall the film will include fairly
masculine themes and the mice-en-scene will be fairly formal and basic. The settings will try and stick to
conventions by being everyday locations accessible to everyone.
Certain parts of the trailer could include:
• The gathering of the boys and planning of their night out.
• Obtaining the camera equipment to film the night.
• Possibly a small scene for each of the characters creating an idea of their lifestyles and who they are as
individuals.
• A flight scene in the airport.
• Some fast pace editing showing the boys having their crazy night trying to win the prize and claim glory.
• Trailer will also include various title screens to keep it conventional and highlight the production companies
involved and adding information about the characters.
6. Film Appeal
My film will appeal to the target audience by being conventional and effective with the conventions used. Through
audience research I have discovered their preferred features of comedy trailers and film which makes it easier for
me to craft my product. The storyline is fairly masculine and is similar to other big hit comedy films which allows the
audience to relate and look at my product. Through doing some audience research on my production ideas I
found out what the audience thought and if this would appeal to them. My audience on a whole said that my idea
are very conventional for a teen comedy and thought it would be effective. The use of mice-en-scene will be
modern and conventional using formal clothing and brands which can appeal to the target audience. I will use
familiar and conventional settings like the beach. I have also researched other popular film trailers and films such as
analysing an inbetweeners advert to see the features and conventions within them.
7. Picture Board
The inbetweeners theme
will be used as you can
see they are in casual
costume and look like a
conventional group of
teenagers.
This is the kind of setting we
are looking for in our film a
conventional setting that is
appealing to the audience.
Another conventional setting
we will try and incorporate is a
pub. The setting is relatable to
the audience and is also
stereotypical for a group of
teenage lads.
