Transportation a contributing factor in “Tourism Take off ”era. Affordable transport made travel more accessible, no longer only the affluent. Technological revolution * Commercial aviation* Development of package tour* Wealth generation* Disposable income* Personal leisure time* Mass travel.
Exploration - small number of tourists visit the area. The area is unspoilt and few tourist facilities exist.
Involvement - local people start to provide some facilities for tourists. There starts to become a recognised tourist season.
Development - the host country starts to develop and advertise the area. The area becomes recognised as a tourist destination.
Consolidation - the area continues to attract tourists. The growth in tourist numbers may not be a fast as before. Some tensions develop between the host and the tourists.
Stagnation - the facilities for the tourists may decline as they become old and run down. The numbers of tourists may decline too.
Rejuvenation - investment and modernisation may occur which leads to improvements and visitor numbers may increase again.
Decline - if the resort is not rejuvenated (stage 6) then it will go into decline. People lose their jobs related to tourism. The image of the area suffers.
The Butler model is a generalisation, and so not all resorts will follow this process.
Disciplines include – Sociology, Economics, Psychology, Anthropology, Political Science, Geography, Ecology, Agriculture, Parks and recreation, Urban and regional planning, Marketing, Law, Business, Transportation, Hotel & restaurant administration, Education.
Leiper’s Model three basic elements
Visitors – travellers in this system, initiate the demand for travel – tourism purposes
Geographical elements – Leiper calls the ‘traveller – generating region,’ the ‘tourism destination region,’ and the ‘transit route region.’
The tourism industry – Leiper initially took to be all firms, organisations and facilities that exist to serve the specific needs and wants of visitors. (Leiper, 1979) but because the idea of a single tourism industry is debatable replaced it with the expression ‘tourism industries’ ( leiper 2008) cited, A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK FOR TOURISM.
TGR – Traveller generating region
TDR – Tourist destination region
