The document discusses targeting a film product toward 18 to 25 year olds. Research was conducted through questionnaires that found this age group preferred horror genre films. Horror films often use teen characters as vulnerable subjects, directly appealing to teen audiences. Elements of the discussed film include a school uniform to link to younger viewers, inclusion of technology like cameras that younger audiences can relate to, and graffiti references and young actor ages of 18-19 that suit the target demographic. The intense music was chosen to match professional horror films and appeal to younger audiences who tend to prefer louder music and horror genres.
1. Our chosen target audience is between 18 to 25 year olds. We wanted to
produce a film, which fits with the theme of our chosen genre of my research
and planning sections. The group discussed right from the start of this unit
how we were going to make sure the product that we produced fit into a
particular group of people, we began thinking about how we were going to
collect info on certain target audiences we had in mind and then how we were
going to use that data to produce the product. Questionnaires were the best
way we found to collect our info.
In our research section questionnaire when I asked the question what genre
do you prefer most of the responses we received where horror and when we
had a look at the responses to the age question there was a lot more 18 to 25
year olds that answered so we believe there is a strong case for the genre
that we have chosen being the popular with that age group.
In researching the horror genre we found that teens are often used as
characters in films as they can be regarded as a socially vulnerable group and
therefore the ideal subjects for these type of films, and therefore this might
explain why there is such a fan base amongst teens as they can directly relate
to the film as they imagine themselves in the situation. However in
a cynical sense the film producers are capitalising by directly targeting this
social group.
The girl in the film is wearing a school uniform which links to a younger age
group. We are using the uniform as it links with the story of the old school that
was once there and the idea of the girl being a student of the school, which
fits in with the target audience age range.
We have included one of the actors with a camera as this is a good reflection
of the younger generation today with the insight into technology and younger
people can relate to the technology and why it is used and they might
understand the concept of it more than older people.
In a couple of the shots that have been taken in side of the building there is a
couple of references to pictures of graffiti that have been sprayed on to the
walls we choose to include some of these as they fit with a younger age group
as it is commonly younger ages in the range of 18 that are interested in this
sort of art work.
Our film as a lot of elements that suit the particular target audience such as
the characters that I have included which are aged in the region of 18 to 19
year olds. We believe having actors the same age and the people who the
film is aged for makes the viewers seem more connected with what’s going on
as the action of the boys in the film where they are walking around a building
out of interest is not a world apart from what some teenagers do. So we think
it is something that I believe people in my target audience will get hooked on.
The music that we included is very intense and loud as it need to keep up with
the pace and the tone of the film which is very powerful and direct we believe
the music fits the sort you would hear in a professional horror movie because
2. while researching music that could fit we had a listen to some of the sound
included in horror films and they use very similar music. As younger people
would tend to like louder music and, according to my research, like horror
movies more and so I thought it was a perfect fit.
