1. Comparison between our product and a real media text
In thispostI am goingto discussthe similaritiesanddifferencesbetweenourproductand a real
mediatext- Insidious(2010).I will mentiondifferentmicroelements(sound,camera,editingand
mise enscene) inordertosee howour product differstoone thatis professionallymade.
Sound
The biggestaspectof the Insidiousopening sequence is quite possiblythe music.It’sscratching
violinsandambientinstrumentscreate anunpleasantfeelingof suspense,which buildsupthe
intensityinthe viewer.Thissharesone thingincommonwithouropeningcreditsbecause theyboth
use musicin the minor,although,the musicinInsidioushasverylarge differences.Firstof all,ituses
manymore instruments givingadifferent,thickertexture.Secondlyitstaysonthroughoutthe clip,
whichisdifferenttooursbecause oursvaries,goingfromloudmusictosilence andchangingmusic
froma nurserysongto musicthat slowlybuildsup.
Anotherdifference inthe soundisthe dialogue.Althoughbothclipsuse onlymusicatthe beginning,
our openingcontainsspeakingwhenthe firstcharacterisintroduced.The reasoningforthisisto
provide informationonthe characterspersonalitiesandonthe plot.We believe Insidiousrefrains
fromdoingthisto make the clipmysteriousandtofocus onthe music.
Camera
While Insidioususesclose upsandwide shots,The Pyre useswide
and longshots;thisisprobablybecause of the settingschose.The
Pyre’ssettingismuchlargerand
openingwithalotof scenerythat
showsthe buildingscurrentstate.
Therefore we chose toreveal itwiththe shotschosen.Meanwhile,
Insidioususesmuchmore claustrophobicshotsatthe beginningto
make the audience feel trapped.However asthe clipcontinuesInsidiousbeginstouse a muchlarger
variationof shotssuch as highangle andlongshots.Thisdefinitelyallowsthe audience to gaingood
knowledge of the filmssurroundings.
Editing
As of editing,the mainnoteworthythingduringInsidious’clip,isthe
openingcreditsandeffectsusedonthe shots(the lightingeffectsand
filters).Thisisanothersimilarityanddifference betweenthe twoclips.
Both use openingcreditsasthisisa conventionof anormal opening
sequence and servesthe purpose of revealingthe maincast.However
onlyInsidioususesfurthereffects;thisisprobablytofurtheraddtothe claustrophobicfeel because
it letsthe audience be able tosee less.
Mise En Scene
The openingtitle sequence of Insidious issetinside
a small Victorianhouse.Thisisone of the main
settingsforthe film,whichissimilartooursina
sense thatwe have chosento use our mainsetting
inour openingsequence.The ideabehindthisistoestablishabondbetweenthe audience andthe

2. settingasto get themcomfortable withthe setting.We believethatInsidiousdoesthisforthe same
reasons.
Anotherthingtonote in the mise enscene isthe costumes the charactersuse.Thisis
understandableasthe openingsequencesare set indifferenttimes(oursbeingsetinthe dayand
theirsbeingsetatnight).Thisisa major difference betweenourfilmsaswe use the costumesto
displaycharacteristicsaboutthem(suchasthe youngmales).
