You and Your Students Are the Scientists: A Sampling of Citizen-Science Opportunities

Citizen science involves non-scientific volunteers partnering with scientists to answer real-world questions through data collection and research. Success depends on having simple protocols, trained volunteers, and providing feedback and sharing results. Examples of citizen science programs discussed are Bird Sleuth, Watershed Dynamics, and World-Wide Monitoring Day. A summary of a study on amphibian road mortality described the collection of over 1,000 live and 500 dead amphibians by volunteers to identify important habitats and inform future planning. The presentation encourages different models of citizen science involvement through schools, nature centers, and community groups.

A major cause is the rapid expansion of infrastructure like roads, dams, and pipelines, which opens up remote forests to deforestation and degradation. Tropical forests, which contain the most biodiversity, are most at risk. Many proposed infrastructure projects, especially dams in the Amazon, will have major environmental impacts far outweighing their economic benefits. The explosive growth of roads is an even bigger threat, as they give access to remote areas leading to more loss of forests and wildlife. Urgent action is needed to curb environmentally destructive development projects to preserve remaining wild areas.

Peter Novak conducted the first study of the life cycle of the cherabin, a small freshwater prawn species found in northern Australian rivers. Over three years, he monitored over 4,500 adult cherabin and tens of thousands of juveniles across a 400 km stretch of the Daly River. He discovered that the cherabin's reproduction and hatching of larvae is timed to the wet season rains from December to March. After the rains, juvenile cherabin migrate upstream in April and May, with up to 14-15 million juveniles replenishing nutrients in the river system. The cherabin must complete their migration to saltwater nurseries within seven days of hatching to survive.

This study investigated the relationship between zooplankton community composition and natural and human factors in 25 small lakes in eastern New York. Zooplankton samples were collected from each lake and analyzed to identify taxa. Cluster analysis identified four distinct zooplankton community types characterized by different dominant taxa. Community composition varied based on lake size, conductivity, and percentage of impervious surface in the lake basin, indicating influence from both natural and anthropogenic drivers. The results provide insight into how zooplankton communities are structured in these lakes and how they relate to environmental conditions.

Several indicators of water quality are identified based on the types of invertebrates present, such as the number of taxa collected (richness), the percentage of mayflies, dragonflies and caddisflies (%EPT), and the Hilsenhoff Index value. Recommendations are provided for monitoring benthic macroinvertebrates in Kushog Lake to evaluate lake health over time.

This study compared passive and active macroinvertebrate collection methods along the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. Passive methods included rock baskets and Hester-Dendy samplers, while active methods used D-frame nets and Serber samplers. The diversity, pollution tolerance, and taxonomic composition of collected macroinvertebrates were analyzed. Results showed that active methods captured a more diverse set of organisms but passive methods also provided valuable data. Both collection types should be used to fully understand macroinvertebrate communities in non-wadeable rivers.

Impacts of Hurricane Sandy

The intern helped with a project that examined plastic pollution in the Chollas Creek watershed in San Diego. To understand the sources, pathways, and fates of plastic pollution, the intern:
1) Conducted trash surveys along the creek to identify common plastic items like bags and wrappers.
2) Tagged and tracked plastic bags through the watershed during rain events to see how plastic moves through the system.
3) Dissected fish from San Diego Bay to see if they had ingested microplastics, which were found in two of the three species.
The results will help educate the public on plastic pollution and the need for better watershed management.

Across the Watershed Spring 2016 - LB bacteria article
This document summarizes the Great Swamp Watershed Association's efforts to improve water quality in Loantaka Brook in Morris County, New Jersey. It describes how high levels of E. coli bacteria were found in the brook, indicating fecal pollution. GSWA investigated upstream and traced the source to a large pipe draining a housing development. Dye testing revealed the pipe was connected to a storm drain in the development. Cathy Law has been teaching since 1995. Passionate about her work she teaches a wide range of science classes at New Paltz HS. She started the Courtyard Gardens in 2008 to create an outdoor learning center dedicated to understanding and improving the environment and enable learning that is problem based and interdisciplinary.
The gardens now feature 200+ species of perennials and grasses chosen for hardiness, adaptability, seasonal variation, and attractiveness to birds, bees, and butterflies. Protected by the school’s inner courtyard, the 15 gardens are a sanctuary for wildlife, serve as an outdoor lab for students, and feature themes including Zen, culinary, medicinal, scented, native, silver, and a stone garden featuring specimen boulders.

Karla Purcell is a fourth grade teacher. During her tenure at JFK she also has taught grades one and two and a hands-on science lab program for grades 1-5. Teaching the science lab got Karla involved in the garden with a small lunchtime club. Over the past several years the JFK garden space has evolved into a complex of four raised beds and a greenhouse that is the foundation for an after school program encompassing gardening, nutrition, science, food citizenship, literacy, and technology. In addition, students donate hundreds of pounds of produce to local not-for-profits. describes creation and maintenance of a school garden.
