Plot Diagram “The Lottery”
Analyze learners:
There are 25 students in my 8th
grade English classroom made up of 14 girls and 11 boys.
The races are white, African America, Asian, and Latino. 50% of the students are average
learners, 20% are below average, and 30% are above average. The majority of the students are
visual and tactile learners
Main Objectives:
The 8th
grade students will understand how to plot diagram by using “The Lottery” as an
example for their work. The students will identify the parts of the diagram and be able to identify
parts of a short with the parts of the diagram. By using media and the smartboard, the students
will demonstrate understanding of plot diagrams and the plot of “The Lottery” by Shirley
Jackson. Students will have a 90% understanding of plot diagraming after this one day lesson.
Methods, Media, and Material:
I will use smartboard, Twitter, and Glogster for understanding of plot and plot
diagramming of short stories such as “The Lottery”
Utilize Media and Materials:
To explain plot and plot diagramming to my students, I will show them a chart that shows
what a plot diagram looks like. I will explain exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and
resolution to the students. After explaining plot, the students will get on twitter and tweet what
they think one of the points on the diagram is relating to the story. Then I will use the smartboard
and have the students to write what they think the exposition, rising action, climax, falling
action, and resolution are in “The Lottery.” After plot diagramming the story, I will show a
Glogster I made for “The Lottery” and they will make a glogster as well showcasing main plots
in the story.
Require Learner Participation:
Students will be using media to show comprehension of plot. They will use Twitter and
the smartboard to identify plot in “The Lottery.” They will also see main plot points using
Glogster, and they will create their own Glogster to show comprehension.
Evaluate and Revise:
2. The students will be assessed by presenting plot on the Glogster and by their participation
using Twitter or the smartboard. I might need to show them plot diagramming through video if
the visual learners need clarity.
