year olds owning a cell phone the risks of use behind the wheel are increasing monumentally.
According to research, even using a hands free device to talk does not completely reduce the risk
of getting into an accident. According to the Highway Safety Association people using a cell
phone while driving are 23 times more likely to get in an accident. Studies show that humans are
only able to multitask to a certain point and while behind the wheel the risks are just too high
(Copeland). The majority legislators understand the hazards of phone use in a car, but continuously
refuse to ban and create laws to prevent it. The statistics back up the hazards of distracted driving
yet the government refuses to prevent the danger.
However, this is not the only reason drivers are distracted. A few examples of distractioncould be
anything from changing the song on the stereo, setting up the GPS, or setting up the Bluetooth

world that is constantly changing and does not grant the certainty that people desire. But, people
want the stability of knowing what is going to happen; this is why certainty is absurd. In his essay
The Surety of Fools, Daniel Kahneman provides examples of people using a phenomenon he calls
the illusion of validity. These people strongly believe their actions cause a specific outcome, when
in reality there is statistical evidence that shows their actions have no direct correlation with the
outcome. While Kahneman argues the illusion of validity comes partially from people s tendency
to make quick decisions without fully conveying the causes, it really stems from people s fear of
uncertainty from having a lack of knowledge. Other fields of academia, such as science and
economics, have admitted that uncertainty grounds their thinking processes. Kahneman is
inaccurate in neglecting to mention that it is the fear of uncertainty that really causes the illusion

to mind was Alcoholics Anonymous. I have heard of AA but never had an expanded understanding
of the program. The first thingI did was google Alcoholics Anonymous University of Iowa and the
rest was a breeze. The first link that appeared was a University of Iowa Hospitals Clinics page that
listed open AA meetings. So as stated earlier, on Tuesday, October 3rd from 12 pm to 1 pm in
Room 5024 Boyd Tower, I gained a whole new outlook on substance abuse. As soon as I walked
into the meeting I was a slightly intimidated at first. The room was small, about the size of a
classroom, and had a conference table full of people of all ages and different genders. Since I
was just observing I decided to sit at a separate table and take notes on the activities that went on
during the meeting. There were about 10 participants taking part in the meeting from ages that
ranged from 30 s to 70 s. There was plenty of diversity in the group of individuals based on
personalities also, but not much diversity in ethnicities as all of the members of this meeting were
white. Once the meeting went underway, I knew I was in for something very interesting. The
meeting began with a moment of silence and preamble.
