Interaction of the Physical and Human Elements of the Environment
THE ISSUE:
Shore intends to build a new Gym/Pool Centre capable of seating 200 people. It will
be used for basketball, swimming, and weights and will be available for community
hire. The intended site is that currently occupied by gym and pool. A plan has
already been submitted but the school council is not happy with it.
Your task You are members of a construction team that specialises in
environmentally friendly buildings for schools.
Your task is to develop a plan where the human elements are in harmony with the
physical elements of the environment. After a thorough investigation of the
proposed site you may have reasons for proposing another site on the school
grounds. However, the building must go ahead and a site on the school grounds
must be found.
Your plan must be drawn on cardboard and presented to the class for approval,
accompanied by reasons for you proposal.
A) You can draw an environmentally friendly building as above or get
images from the net or magazines. You must present this image to the
class.
B) You must present to the class in oral form reasons why you want to
build at Shore in an environmentally friendly way.
On your diagram you should include all relevant physical features like flora, fauna, heat
and light, soil, air and water and elements of the human environment such as political,
socio-cultural and economic and any others you think appropriate. Refer to pages 11
and 12 of your text for information. These must be labelled on your diagram and explained
in your reasons why you want to build at Shore.
