By: Neha Tiwari
BA.LLB
The League of Nations was to be an organization
where representatives of the world´s Nations
would meet settle their difference by discussion
instead of war. It was founded in Geneva
Switzerland in1919
League of Nations
In the year 1914 the world was involved in a conflict (The Great War).
The war had finished in 1918 and The Treaty of Versailles was created. It
was the peace settlement signed after World War One.
In 1918, The president of The United States Woodrow Wilson gave a speech with a
special contribution called “The Fourteen Points”
“Point # 14: A general association of nations must be formed under specific covenants
for the purpose of affording mutual guarantees of political independence and
territorial integrity to great and small states alike”.
The official languages of The League were:
• English
• French and
• Spanish
The permanent members were:
• Great Britain:
• Italy
• France
• Japan
1.To avert future conflicts as devastating as The World War One.
2. To Strengthen the conditions of The Treaty of Versailles.
3. To help countries in crisis (economic and healthy)
1. The secretariat: It was responsible for the
administrative work.
2. The Council: It was responsible for the direction of the
actions of The Assembly
3. The Assembly: It was responsible for the decisions that
they need to made
Despite the weaknesses of The League, this
organization had some successes in some conflicts:
Sweden and Finland disputed the possession of The Aland Islands.
However, the islands had traditionally belonged to Finland and The League decided in favor of Finland.
Germany and Poland debated for Upper Silesia and after agreements
with The League of Nations they decided to split Upper Silesia between
Germany and Poland
It is a result of a border conflict where Greece decide to invade Bulgaria after
the Bulgarian militaries killed a Greek soldier. Nevertheless, The League
intervened and ordered the withdrawal of the Greek Army and a economic
sanction.
Weak: The League had not a great military force.
America: Many Americans were against their country become
permanently involved in the problem of Europe and U.S.A refused to
join The league of Nations.
Structure: The league was a disorganized entity.
Depression: In 1930, The world fell in a great crisis.
Unsuccessful: The experience of The League Of Nations had few successes.
Members: The nations involved rarely had communication.
Bullies: The League excluded countries such as Russia and Germany
