Respiratory system in man
Role of pharynx in respiration
a. The learner already knows that lungs are the respiratory organ in
man
a. Activity cards
b. Chart showing respiratory system
4. TEACHING LEANING INTERACTION
PUPIL RESPONSE
Today we can learn through a novel method, where the teacher will
be giving you varieties of learning experiences .These experiences
leads you to some clues through which you can recognize what the
teacher wants to teach you .After that the teacher will be explaining
it in detail.
INTRODUCTION
As part of awakening process teacher starts with :
Learning Experience 1
Teacher gave activity cards containing some clues denoting the
topic she is going to transact one on each bench. Students have to
join the clues and find out the topic. The clues were :-
a. It helps in waste removal
b. I can contribute carbon dioxide to atmosphere
c. Without me humans cannot produce energy
d. No human can live without me
e. Some call me simply breathing
f. Some call me cellular oxidation of food
g. Cigarette smoke often blocks my path
Explanation
Very good .Do you want to know more about respiratory system in
man?
Ok today we can learn about Respiratory System in Man (BBH) in
detail
PRESENTATION
Learning Experience 2
Teacher asks the students to Touch the nose and nasal cavity and
find out the special features.
Students joins the clues
and says respiratory
system
Pupil says yes
Pupil says,
a. Presence of hair
b. Presence of mucus
5. Explanation
Very good!!!
Teacher with the help of a chart explains that, hairs help to filter the
air and mucus helps to keep the cavity germ free. Presence moisture
makes the air purify and the presence of chemical substance in
mucus kills the germs.
Learning Experience 3
Teacher asks the students to Open their mouth and observe each
other and find out any speciality of their throat
Explanation
Very good!!
Teacher explains the role of epiglottis (BB) ,then explains pharynx
(BB) with a simply made teaching aid showing both oesophagus
and respiratory system
Learning Experience 4
Teacher asks the students to keep their fingers on the throat and say
“I like biology”. What do you feel?
Why do so? From where the vibration comes from ?
Explanation
Very good!!
Teacher explains the structure and function of larynx (BB) .It is
also call sound box. It vibrates in accordance with the sound wave.
Learning Experience 5
Teacher asks the students to touch the throat portion and tell the
shape and what they feel it is.
Explanation
The larynx continues to trachea. It is a cartilaginous tube of 12 cm
in length and 2.5 cm in diameter. The C shaped cartilaginous rings
prevent the trachea from collapsing .The trachea leads to
bronchi(BB)
Pupil listens carefully
Pupil says
a. Small tongue
b. Opening to
oesophagus and
trachea
Pupil says,
A vibration is felt
Pupil says,
Vibration occurs
when sound is
produced
Pupil listens carefully
Pupil says,
Bony ring like trachea
Pupil listens carefully
6. Learning Experience 6
Teacher asks the students to place their palm over their and take a
deep breath and say what do they feel.
Explanation
Very good!!
The bronchi enter into the lungs found on either side of thoracic
cavity. Lungs are protected by double layered membrane called
pleura (BB). Bronchi that enter the lungs divide into small branches
called bronchioles(BB).During inspiration the diaphragm lowers
and air is filled into the lungs. During expiration the diaphragm
returns to original position and air is expelled out
ACTIVITY
Teacher gives 8 activity cards containing
1. Nasal cavity
2. Epiglottis
3. Pharynx
4. Larynx
5. Trachea
6. Lungs
7. Bronchus
8. Bronchioles
and ask the students to arrange in order of air passage to form a
flow chart
REVIEW QUESTIONS
1. Which is the common passage for food and air ?
2. What is larynx?
FOLLOW UP ACTIVITY
“Talking while eating is a bad habit”.Analyse the statement and
give your opinion
Pupil says,
Movement of lungs
when inhale and exhale
Pupil listens carefully
Pupil actively participates
and joins the cards to form
a flow chart showing the
air passage from nose to
lungs
