3. Remember to Wear Safety
Goggles/Glasses
If strong alkali gets on your skin it dissolves
your skin. Your skin feels soapy, and you get a
chemical burn. Alkalis are harmful if you get
them in your eyes. Always wear eye protection
when using alkalis.
4. Alkalis can be diluted with water to make them
less dangerous.
Remember how Bubble Tea can be diluted?
Acids and alkalis are chemical opposites. They
cancel each other out when they are mixed
together.
5. The PH scale
The PH scale (potential hydrogen) shows us
how much. We use the PH scale to find out if
something is an acid or alkali.
Coca-cola contains acid.
Cleaning products contain alkali.
6. Acids and Alkalis - Opposites
Acids and Alkalis are opposites. Notice how
they are at opposite ends of the PH scale.
Cocal-Cola Bleach cleaning fluid
7. Neutral
Some things are in the middle of the PH scale.
These have a PH level of neutral.
Drinking water
8. Neutralization
When you add alkali to acid it becomes
neutral. This is called neutralization.

are not.
